Sue, they also emailed me .pdfs with the tickets. I only printed the confirmation page when I registered and printed the tickets from the email.

I finally figured it out internetwiz, thanks. a tad confusing. Sue

To get back to rijsttafel, I think anyone going to A'dam needs to experience this, however authentic or inauthentic it may be. It's delicious, and IME, you get a LOT more than 2 or 3 dishes, more like at least a dozen. We like Jun and Sara Citra, but there are others. The best one we ever had was in Den Bosch, but it's almost always yummy and well worth it for a meal, IMO.
|
Jun is considered to be a good indo restaurant. That one on Overtoom that I pointed to is a bit more fusion, but considered to be good as well.
Other than that I'd rather eat Indo food in The Hague. |
ditto what StCirq says about Rijstaffel - over the years I took over 1,000 folks on tours to Rijstaffel in Amsterdam - and though that restaurant - the Asie - would not make menachem's or other Dutch folks' lists of having good rice tables EVERYONE had a great time and considered it to be one of their best memories of the whole tour.
But do not judge a rijstaffel by the dishes promised as a small dish of peanuts or rice wafers may be considered ones! |
Hi, You all have been a great help in using my time wisely while in Amsterdam (I have been there before, several times, but it has been awhile back). I have most of the museums figured out, and we have only 3 days before we get on a little ship. We will be at a hotel after the first night, near Vondelpark at a hotel on Voorburgwal, and will go to the A. Frank house. Can anyone comment on the nearby Tulip Museum? We will definitely go to the Rijks and Van Gogh, and Resistance Museum, but could probably get a couple more possibly. Is the Botanical Garden near the Resistance Museum? Anyway thanks for all the help. Sue

We will be at a hotel after the first night, near Vondelpark at a hotel on Voorburgwal
What does this mean? Which Voorburgwal? We've got 3 of those. And Vondelpark and any of the Voorbugwallen are quite a distance apart. |
Tulip museum is a waste of time and money. Hortus and Resistance Museum are nearly across the road from each other. Also nearby are the Jewish Historical Museum and the beautiful Portugese Synagogue (Snoge)
|
Menachem we will have the museum card, Resistance for sure, been to Jewish Historical in past, might return. What is the Hortus? Also only have one night on Appollian near Vondelpark and will do VAn Gogh and Rijks that day, I want son to see the monument on Appollinaire to those shot by Gestapo, very moving monument to me.Then two nights over at a new hotel/Sofitel Legend on Voorbugwallen, so will be in that area. Too much to sea and do and never enough time. Sue (I am not Jewish, but feel son needs to see this to remember).
|
What is the Hortus?>
Botanical Gardens, right? |
Palen, I think that is correct and that is great, right near the Resistance Museum it looks like. Sue
|
I recently visited JHM, after its revamp and was pleasantly surprised, especially by the way they did the "religious" section in the Great Synagogue.
Appollinaire is Apollolaan, I assume? While you're visiting monuments, the one in the Gerrit vd Veenstraat is also worth walking out to. There's Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, is that where the hotel is? Hortus is indeed Hortus Botanicus, Botanical Garden. If you're walking there from Nieuwezijds, walk via Oude Manhuispoort, where Amsterdam University began. |
Menachem, yes it is Apollolaan first night, then over to Sofitel Legend on Voorburgwal second night, then ship. I need to be more careful with my spelling. So can you tell me about the Gerrit vd Veenstraat, is it anywhere near where we will be?
Also, not sure if we will do the Reistaffel the first or second night, maybe second...so is there a good Reistaffel near Voorburgwal. You must live in Amsterdam, right? I am trying to get my son more knowledgeable about WW II/ and the roll Holland played in it, esp with underground/Resistance. Thanks. Sue |
Menachem, I looked it up on google, I wonder how far that is from our hotel, the Delphi on Apollolaan? Sue

Also near the Resistance Museum is the Maritime Museum showcasing Dutch Naval history -lots of old boats to walk around in - the Museum Card makes it easy to pop into such museums for a short time when you would not pay the regular admission price perhaps to do so: https://www.google.com/search?q=mari...HdhvCWwQsAQIIg I believe the Troppen Museum is near there too and that is fantastic but not sure if it is closing as some say - but if there a wondrous collection of life in tropical areas - with re-created street scenes- anyway just a unique museum if in the area and if still open as seems to be: https://www.google.com/search?q=trop...HdW8CDYQsAQIHA You must live in Amsterdam, right? I believe menachem did live in Amsterdam but now domiciles in Rotterdam but may work in Amsterdam? Anyway IME of many posts an absolute expert on all things Amsterdam... damn damn damn! |
Sue, Gerrit vd Veen straat used to be Euterpestraat: the headquarters of the Gestapo was there. One resistance group, "The Free Artist, that Van der Veen founded together with a musician and with writer and poet Willem Arondeus, forged fake IDs for jews who needed to go into hiding. He was arrested after an attack on the Amsterdam public record office, tortured at Euterpestraat and finally executed in Overveen. GvdV straat is near Apollolaan. A sculpture by Van der Veen can be seen at Utrecht Central Station, on the viaduct of the western approach to the station.
For many artists and for the groups hostile to the German occupation he was a shining example. Interesting to note is that his nephews and nieces became active in the arts and in politics after the war. His sculpture "The Free Woman" can be seen at Churchilllaan. Also near Apollolaan. This is the monument for the Artists' Resistance http://www.4en5mei.nl/herdenken-en-v...smonument/1518 A rijsttafel near Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal..... my bet would be on Indonesian Kitchen, one of the latest crop of "neo" Indo restaurants https://www.iens.nl/restaurant/indon...kitchen/258133 PalenQ, I endured life in Amsterdam for 10 long years, after which I could escape to Rotterdam. But a lot of my business takes place in Amsterdam, so I visit there regularly. Always glad to get on the train to Rotterdam at the end of the day though. The status of Tropenmuseum is unclear. It's struggling, that's for sure and every year its life is prolonged for one more year, but they've lost most of their structural government support. Their wonderful library, where I did part of my Ph.d research was sold for scrap (I wish that weren't true, but it is) until the Alexandria library intervened and saved part of the irreplaceable collection. They show part of their core collection, and they have a children's programme and exhibition on Morocco at the moment. Go see it while it lasts, if only for the spectacular building. One remark. I wouldn't consider the Maritime Museum to be "near" the Resistance museum. It's quite a long walk, but one that visits a wonderful and often overlooked part of Amsterdam, the area between Plantage and Wittenburgergracht. Just beyond the Maritime Museum, there is the former Navy yard, now declassified and accessible. Pension Homeland is there, they have a great restaurant in the old officers' mess. I'll plug them again and again, because it's a great outfit, owned and managed by the people who also own Cafe Bern at Nieuwmarkt. |
Sue, BTW, that 4en5mei site that I linked to lists all war monuments in Amsterdam (in the entire country in fact). Visiting them might make for an interesting walk in its own right and can take you to many parts of Amsterdam, because there are monuments everywhere.
|
Also noteworthy is that to this day, two daily newspapers originated as resistance newsbulletins: protestant-christian Trouw (Fides) and left leaning Amsterdam paper Het Parool (The Password).
|
Palen and Menachem, thanks so much for all the info, I do appreciate it. I wish we had more time in Amsterdam, but will cover as much as we can. Thanks. Sue

Try to see if you can get hold of "Winter in Wartime". It's an adaptation of a hugely popular novel for young adults, written by Jan Terlouw, eminence grise of liberal politics.
