I was wrong about gelato (well, mostly wrong)!
I posted this on US board but since original gelato thread was here, thought I would put it here too.
I was one of those who insisted that gelato can only be had in Italy. Nothing I had ever had in the US was even close and mostly it was an insult to the name to even call it gelato. However, we are in LA right now and yesterday in Venice, (CA as opposed to IT ) we went to http://www.yelp.com/biz/nice-cream-n...-sorbet-venice I must admit that it was 95% of the way there and well worth a special trip if you are in LA and are a gelato aficionado! |
Well, SW: Since I do remember that we had words (!) about the subject, I think you are a better person for fessing up! Good job!
|
I have to admit that I had great gelato in Las Vegas of all places.
|
We have a very good gelato shop in Watkinsville.
The genteleman who runs it had imported all of his equipment from Italy. ((I)) |
There's a fantastic gelato shop just down the road from my house in Perth, Australia. It's owned by an Italian family. I've never been to Italy, so I have no idea how it compares to the real McCoy, but man it's good, especially the mango (and I don't even like mangos!).

I thnk the secret is, if a real italian runs it. In Nafplio Greece off the main square there is a Gelato shop (Antica Roma?) that has lines every night! The same old love story, Italian falls in love with a Greek, settles there, gets homesick for Italian specialties, opens shop. At any rate, it's divine.

We have a gelato shop in Katy that is as good as any I have had in Italy

Paciugo Gelato - Hill Country Galleria, Bee Cave, Texas!
About 20+ flavors, but OMG, their coconut is heavenly! :@) |
I think I've had enough gelato in Italy to qualify me to say...come to Philadelphia.
http://www.capogirogelato.com/ Amazing, amazing wonderfulness. |
I'm dreaming of gelato, 10 days til Rome and that is one of the things I'm looking forward to most. (I've been dieting, hence the focus on yummy sounding items).

I had great gelato in Sioux Falls, SD, this afternoon. Authentically made by an Italian-American with authentic machines.
But even if the taste is exactly the same, I think that Florence or Rome or Wherever in Italy adds something. Don't you? |
my favorite flavors are:
coconut lemon stratchitella (sp) What are yours? |
Here are some flavors for those of us who want to dream...
Riso * Mint Chip * Coffee * Hazel Dream Bacio * Walnut * Fior DiLatte Caramel *Fondant * Cassata * Stracciatella Torrone * Cinnamon * Mocha Malaga * Creme Brulee * Hazelnut Pistachio * Tiramisu * Lemon Vanilla * Zabaglione * White Chocolate Chocolate * Amaretto * Sour Cherry Coconut * Peanut Butter * Pumpkin |
The machines really dont make that much of a difference. The secret to good Artisian Italian Gelato is the ingredients. All natural and fresh. We teach Gelato making here in Calabria, it is one week of heaven.
