When I was going to Scotland for two months I asked my credit card company if they offered a card with your photo on it. They did, so I got that, and used it while abroad. I felt a little safer, just because it was at least a little harder to use (of course, the internet doesn't check ID) Also, be sure to notify your credit card company that you will be abroad and travelling. I had to be sure that my company knew that I was not only in Scotland, but travelling as well. this was helpful because as I made reservations for hostels charges came up for various cities often on the same day. I had no problems with service.

I also wore a belt under my clothes where I kept my credit card. When I pulled it out, it looked like I was reaching into my pocket.

Most of the concern with credit card fraud, I think, comes from the fact that many people let their guard down on vacation and fail to protect themselves because this is their time to relax. Just be aware and you should be fine.

One other suggestion I have to help protect you is that you call your credit card companies and let them know where you will be travelling and then let them know when you return home.

We've been victums of credit card fraud twice, but it didn't cost us anyting and it really wasn't a big deal. We still pay for everything on our credit cards both in the States and in Europe. Besides the obvious plus of not carrying cash, if you put a charge on your credit card and there is a dispute (such as a mischarge), you have leverage. Also, some cards include extra auto insurance with them.

So just have a great trip and don't worry.

Nytraveler, Rick, artlover, Deanagld (loved the belt idea), Budman, Allisonm thanks so much for the constructive advice.
I'm going to follow your suggestions and have a long talk with bank, letting them know my travel dates. I'll do what I can to protect myself and my card, but things beyond my control won't be permitted to ruin my holiday.
Scarlett - I will continue to read Fodors because there are some lovely, helpful folk whose assistance has proved invaluable. The rest...well no resource is without flaws...

Lisa I was not being critical only tried to point out the nature of most postings here. BTW the "lost luggage" thread was started with the question asked... "who hasn't lost their luggage". And we answered.

I would never begin a thread after my trip saying I didn't lose my luggage, didn't get pickpocketed, didn't have face credit card fraud, no one was rude, etc.

I thought this might be a helpful point to consider, not yet another the "flaw" on the board.
