I second LE VIEUX BISTRO ( near Notre Dame)

I just arrived a few hours ago from my trip to Paris.

I'm very excited to share with you my dining experiences, but since it's late (2357), the trip report will have to wait until tomorrow, at least...

I just wanted to add that of all the 4 restaurants we tried, LE VIEUX BISTRO left a lasting impression.....a REALLY REALLY lasting one. It serves real wholesome french food which is hard to beat. My husband and I love to explore the gourmet world, and believe me....this is really really hard to beat.

I will definitely be the ambassador for this restaurant. Several of the restaurants which have been highly recommended on this board have been quite disappointing. I will update you all in a trip report. I'll have to catch my breath first.

A tip: You must make a reservation. We saw many people (especially tourists) who were turned away.

more to follow......

I'm glad to know that Le Vieux Bistro has improved since we ate there in 2001, when we had the worst meal ever in France. Perhaps there's been a change in management?

I had lunch there recently and it was very nice; it's a great location too, just opposite Notre Dame. What was bad about your meal Underhill?

My husband and I ate lunch at Le Vieux Bistro in Sept. 2002 and loved it! I had soupe à l'oignon gratinée and sole meunière. My husband ordered steak aux fines herbes and pommes dauphinois. For dessert I had profiteroles and DH ordered mousse au chocolat. Everything was delicious! We did not have reservations and were seated immediately (although the restaurant is quite small so if there were a crowd I imagine you would be out of luck). I highly recommend it!

Everything, unfortunately--slimy leek salad, boeuf bourguignon with as much gristle as meat and not cooked as long as it should have been, tough pastry, terrible service...it was a great disappointment. No one in the room we were seated in seemed to be enjoying their food either. But that was three years ago, and things must have changed.
