any advice for use of i-phone and i-pad in United Kingdom don't need it as a phone only check email and text thank you in advance

other than to use it wherever you can get free wi-fi?

Presumable texting and email (via 3G) comes via your provider, so you will need to check with them with regard to fees abroad (which can be very high).

I do know that when I travel abroad (from UK to mainland Europe, for instance), I can use my phone/text but it is expensive, and my 3G/internet access is extortionate, so I switch off Cellular Data and only access the internet when I can get free wifi (eg at my hotel).

Texting is part of your phone service, so you will need to check with your provider on whether you can use it in the UK or not and how much they will charge you for roaming.

Email can be done with free wifi over the Internet, but if you want to check your voicemail, see above.

We have seen numerous reports of young people texting abroad as they do at home and getting bills upward of $700 when they return home. I don't know if they are true, but there have been plenty of them. Just turn off all the 3G features and use only free wifi.

If you have an unlocked iPad, you could buy a local sim card for 3G. "3" Mobile sell several cards for a reasonable price and they don't require you to have a UK bank account. You just put the sim into your iPad and voila, you have internet! Effective, cheap, and brilliant for all of your Facebook, email, and general usage. If (like me) you require a huge amount of upload data for photos or Skype etc. then, I'd go for free wifi:)

First off, ignore the advice above in case you didn't realize he was pulling your leg.

If you don't need the phone function turn off roaming and cell data and use WIFI only. There is no shortage of free connections... download the free wifi finder app from JIWire.com
