Hi, I have to ask because our hotel in Rome just told me that they don't have any availability within our dates. But they recommended a B&B across the street. What is a Bed and Breakfast???? We never stayed one.

A Bed and Breakfast means a place that includes breakfast in the price of your room. The term used to be equated with smaller, homey establishments. But now, many larger, swankier places are getting on the breakfast bandwagon.

Not at all.
Usually someone's house, they rent out a room, and provide a breakfast in the morning, usually in a communcal room.
Likewise, you may/may not have ensuite bathroom, AC,etc..

They can vary in size, but are usually small and are often better price wise than a hotel room.Can be a good way to meet people, get local info (tourist sites, recommended restaurants,etc..)

In Ireland, one of my B&Bs was in an old manor house. What character, and at a good price.

Ask them the name of the place and see if they have a website. You should also go to www.tripadvisor and do a search here to see if there are any reviews about the place. Know before you go..

I think it also means there won't be someone on the premises all the time, like a hotel would have.

They are small places and usually very charming. Usally you will be in a private home who will serve you breakfast and in some cases serve dinner on request.

There is such a range in bed & breakfasts these days. Some have shared bath and what may feel like a private home. Others are like inns with personal touches. Some places you dine with other guest, some you keep to yourself. I prefer them, myself and have stayed at different kinds. But most places do have their own bathroom - but it doesn't hurt to ask. But research the place and see if it is to your liking.

w/o knowing which B&B it is - really can't say what it is. As you can see from above there are MANY descriptions of B&Bs. Some are private homes and others are basically small hotels w/o some of the "services" of a true hotel. Some are quite simple/inexpensive, and some are very posh and pricier than a hotel.

All will serve some sort of breakfast included in the room rates. So - what is the name of the B&B, then we can help you more.

Don't confuse B&B's in Italy with B&B's in USA. You're not going to be expected to eat a farm breakfast (which is one of the things that I don't like about US B&B's.) Just continental, typically European.

Basically, they're just smaller places than hotels. They're much the same as what used to be referred to as "pensiones." Quality varies. We stayed in some wonderful B&B's in October 2006, including the Arco del Lauro in the Trastevere area of Rome.

A B&B also would be a place with no "star" rating which doesn't mean it's below standard. I can be certain floors in a Palazzo with very fancy decor and includes breakfast. I does usually mean there are no concierge services or no night front desk. Some B&B's give you a key to the front door to let yourself in. It's a broad term so you need to really research the specific place. As suggested, tripadvisor is a good place to look.

Thanks for the information. Now I know what a Bed and Breakfast is, it's exactly what I thought. I don't think we like the idea of sharing a bathroom. The website says that the rooms have their own bathroom. Here is their website. If you wouldn't mind, can you tell me if it looks like a regular hotel or an actual Bed & Breakfast.

B&amp;B -- basically because no lobby/reception; but you <i>do</i> have a private bath. Looks like quite a good deal to me, but it's always hard to tell from pics. In any case, it is exactly what used to be referred to as a &quot;pensione.&quot; Check TripAdvisor for reviews -- if they're half-decent, go for it!

Sharing a bathroom can happen in a B&amp;B or a hotel -- but that doesn't apply to this place since the website says &gt;&gt;The rooms are equipped with private bathroom, air conditioning, tv, fridge and safe&lt;&lt;

The B&amp;B L'angolo Dei Papi calls itself a Guest House - which usually means a B&amp;B-type place but often a bit larger.

Hello romikant. This B&amp;B looks fine but I did notice that their website does not indicate whether or not they have a deskclerk 24/7. Due to a very serious problem I had one time..the only time I stayed in a place that did not have a 24/7 desk clerk..I personally will not stay anywhere that does not. But not everyone feels that way of course.

It definitely upscale from the looks of it...and it will cost you $130 (95 euros)..with breakfast and ensuite bathroom, a/c etc...very close to the Vatican, pretty decent surroundings.

I think janisj hit the nail on the head when she drew attention to its description of 'guest house', although I would describe one as a hotel-type place but smaller. Essentially a place which has providing accommodation as its main purpose but without all the trappings of a hotel.

This one looks fine.

I think the trouble with the term 'B&amp;B' is that it can mean different things. To me a B&amp;B establishment is essentially a private home with only a small number of letting rooms, but the term can also be used to mean room and breakfast anywhere.
