I have a 14-hour layover in Frankfurt

I was thinking about hitting the town. I will be there next Sunday (Sep.27).

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Which airport are you landing at? If you are arriving at the main Frankfurt airport and not Hahn, you will have no problems taking the train into Frankfurt - about 15 minutes.

Sorry, don't know what will be open on a Sunday.

Next Sunday is AUG 27th, not SEPT 27th-might make a difference if something's going on in Frankfurt. You know what they say about time flying ...

Alô Viajante Brasileiro! You will have enough time to go to the center of Frankfurt, do some sightseeing (beautiful Cathedral), eat some good sausage, drink a nice beer, and be back in time for your connection! Boa Viagem!

Oops. Forgot to mention which airport. I will be disembarking at FRA.

And yes..it's Aug 27. Too much travel planning can lead to this kind of errors...

I spent a Sunday in Frankfurt 3 years ago and had a terrible time finding anything open. There were a few restaurants, but no shops open at all. I'd definately check out the business hours of places before heading there.

From FRA, take S-bahn which will take you to central train station in about 20min or so.
No, stores will not be open on Sundays. YOu can still walk around the central part. Botanical garden and museums are nice.

Thanks a bunch.

Most museums will be open on Sunday. Frankfurt has some great museums, many located on the other side of the Main river in Sachsenhausen. My favorite is the Staedel Museum, where you will find some great examples of German impressionism. It can be easily reached by public transportation, or by walking on the pedestrian bridge over the river.

The apple-wine taverns would be a great place to experience Frankfurt. I like the Zum Wagner on Schweizerstrasse (also in Sachsenhausen).

If you really have 14 hours of free time, you could also consider catching a train from the airport to Baden-Baden. Cafes, restaurants and many shops will be open on Sunday. You could opt to soak away your jet lag in one of the two public spas (have a massage or facial too) or one of the private hotel spas (they have day rates). Take a stroll in the parks, listen to the free concerts, enjoy some delicious pastries, take in the outstanding Chagall exhibit at the Frieder-Burda museum.

There are direct trains from the airport to BB and vice versa, taking 1 hour, 21 minutes and costing about 30€ each way.

I liked this idea, B.

Now, I have just realized I will be flying out from HHN-Frankfurt.

Does your suggestion also work on this scenario?

BTilke Aug 22nd, 2006 12:44 AM

Well, not really. The trip via mass transit from BB to Frankfurt Hahn takes between 3.5 hours and over 6 hours and can involve several changes. The shortest trip (3.5 hours) involves taking a train to Mainz, then catching a bus to the airport. The trip from BB to Hahn costs about 30€. Of course, if you are willing to pay for it, you could arrange for a driver to take you from BB to Frankfurt Hahn, but that would probably cost a couple of hundred euros. It's a pretty ride, though. (I went for business on a similar distance taxi journey from a spot in the Netherlands to Aachen, Germany, and it cost 250€.)
