My thanks Schuler. When I do finally get to England, it is the countryside that draws my ... heart. Your journal was a great read!

Got pictures?

Dear SChuler - you packed a lot into 5 days. So pleased you enjoyed teh southwest, especially when I read your description of Appledore. we had house there once where we spent family holidays with our kids, so it brings back many happy memories. Our house was up "one end street". If you walk past the scenic car park [used to be a wooden ship-builders - did you know that the golden hind was built in Appledore?]and keep gonig, the street become even more "greek" - little multi-cloured cottages - until you reach the lifeboat station., and bit of a beach. WE still try to get there once a year, and the kids, aged 15 & 18 still want to come with us.
Next time, come to west/south cornwall, but mind the hedges - down here, there's stone in the middle of them!

Great report, schuler. You covered a lot in a mere 5 days and must have kept copious notes to keep all the little towns straight in your mind...like the good English teacher you are ;-)

"I can't see over the hedges!" LOL - reminds me when we had family from Switzerland visiting us in New England and asking us "when are we getting out of the woods" .....

Have a wonderful trip home and thank you so much!

I enjoyed this--especially as you hit some of the little villages which we didn't. My husband drove on our two trips to Cornwall, and he too complained about the hedges. I, as passenger, got a glimpse through and in between once in awhile.

I also enjoyed the area around Sherbourne. We did not make it to Glastonbury which as a reader of King Arthur legends, I would love to see.

I'm sorry you didn't have time to walk down to the ruins at Tintagel. It was a beautiful place.

Thanks for all of your nice replies.

I enjoyed Bath and Totnes and all the other places but really LOVED Glastonbury, Sampford Brett, Bossington, Clovelly (after the crowds), Dartmoor, Dartmouth and Sherborne. I miss the scones with clotted cream and the delicious apple cider with our evening meal but I'm a bit worried about all those farmers who are barely making a living. There seems to be too many of them.

I know that it is a long time since this report was written, but it is as relevant today as it was when written. I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the journey and the little villages along the way. What has made a big impression on me is how much you managed to squeeze into such a short time.

I am currently planning a 10 day trip to the West Country in May and your trip report has been very valuable to me in that planning. I like the way that you used many little country roads, even though you couldn't see much because of the hedges on either side. It enabled you to reach little villages that are off the beaten track. I have taken note of some of the routes you took and of the villages you enjoyed and will make sure to pop into some of them.

Thank you for your insights and a most enjoyable report :)

Thanks for the compliments. It really was a special trip and we were extremely lucky with the weather. We had some truly incredible moments, such as the Tor and Bossington. Being in Bossington was like going back in time. Maybe we were just lucky that day because the only traffic on that tiny lane were horse riders.

On all my trips, it's the memories of special, unplanned moments that stand out. Things you could never plan or foresee but have brought untold warm memories or insight.

Wishing you lots of success on all your travels!

Schuler
