I can only speak about my daughter's experience (a US citizen.) She was accepted into two study abroad programs in England - one for the summer and one for the fall. Her fall program required a different visa as she would have an internship as well.
The timeline for applying for the second visa was quite strict and she had to also obtain biometrics within two weeks of applying for that visa. Her passport also needed to be submitted to have the visa attached to it.
Given the timeline issues she had very little time before her departure for the first program in order to obtain the visa for the second program. We ended up working with an expeditor in order to arrange everything in a timely manner.
My daughter had to show proof that she was leaving the UK in between programs and at the end of the last program and she felt she would not have been admitted to the UK without this proof. (She had a round trip air ticket to and from the US and a Eurostar ticket to Paris.) She was also advised to bring a bank statement of an account in her name as proof that she had sufficient funds to cover her stay abroad.
I believe the UK has stricter policies than some other countries but I would try to get as much information and assistance as you can from the school you are applying to. Good luck!
