Hydrofoil from Vienna to Budapest
 

We are planning a trip to these cities in Sept and were considering taking the hydrofoil from Vienna to Budapest. It had been recommended to us to do but I was wondering if anyone could give us more info on it. Is it a pleasurable way to get from one city to the other or should we consider other forms of transportation? Thank you!

I think the train transfer is more practical.

The train takes about 1/2 the time , much less costly and more comfortable.

The hydrofoil takes about 5 1/2 to 6 hours for the journey.
You must be there 1 hour before departure adding to the overall time .
20 kilos of luggage free - after that a charge per kilo.
Add the less than great scenery along this part of the Danube River and the train option becomes even better

Thanks for the reply. I am thinking it might be better to train to Bratislava, spend the day and night there, and then on to Budapest. My DH loves the water but the hydrofoil does not sound like the best way to go.

Perhaps a compromise-

the twin city liner travels Vienna - Bratislava -
Fast , modern, comfortable interior- a little like traveling on a aircraft with nice seating- dock on the Danube Canal in the center of Vienna- travel time is quick 75 minutes to Bratislava -
but check the luggage situation- very limited.

note that hydrofoil or boat is faster downstream (Vienna Budapest) than up ... none is a great joy, though the locks are kind of interesting, once; on a glorious day, the option to be outside is a pleasure; the train tickets, especially roundtrip, are steeply discounted when purchased locally fewer than 30 days before travel; the trains don't sell out, though the very cheap tickets may...
