Hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento?
Has anyone taken the hydrofoil for metro al mare from Naples to Sorrento? We are consider taking it rather than the Circumvesuviana? Any thoughts or recommendations greatly appreciated.

If you're arriving in Naples by train it would be more convenient to take the train to Sorrento. The Sorrento station is right in town.
If you take the hydrofoil you have to get to the port and then, once in Sorrento, take the little bus from the port into town. If you have a lot of luggage you might have problems on the small Sorrento bus. |
Actually the Circumvesuviana station is in the basement of Naples Centrale. So if you arrive in Naples by train, you just go downstairs and catch the appropriate train to Sorrento.
One of Fodor's (unofficial) experts on the Naples area, A_Brit_in_Ischia, reported that Metro del Mare was probably not going to run this year, due to a loss of government funding. Any new news on this, Peter? Anybody? |
Thanks for the insight, especially about the port and bus. Seems that will just add time rather than save it ,

Much depends on just where one's starting from, and when - but without a doubt the hydrofoil is the most pleasant way to cross the Bay....
http://www.pbase.com/isolaverde/image/125491341 It's also the fastest, taking only some 35 minutes, as against up to 65 on the Circumvesuviana railway. The service runs all year, and the current timetable can be found here: http://www.alilauro.it/orari.pdf In previous years the Metro del Mare added a few extra crossings, but - for the nth time - that's indeed not operating this summer... http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...e-for-2011.cfm However, I see you'll be coming down by train from Rome and, from the main station where you'll arrive, the CV trains are a lot more convenient, and cheaper - so why not save the sea trip for when you visit the city? You might try this, for some help with the change of platforms once you get to Naples... http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...-or-pompei.cfm Peter |
Thanks for the info Peter
