We picked up the ferry to Dubrovnik in Stari Grad, so the hotel gave us a ride from Hvar to S.G. (210 kuna / $35). Though I don't know how much they cost, there were several minibuses meeting the ferry in S.G., and quite a few people got on them. They didn't seem to belong to a particular hotel, so I imagine you could get a ride with one of them. All the passengers had luggage. This looked like the best way to go. Didn't see the public bus while we were there. There were a couple of taxis waiting--one left empty.

Buses and taxis meet every ferry at Stari Grad. I did it once on Christmas Day and there was a minibus to Hvar town. The bus fare's about 15 kuna, and a taxi would be perhaps 200 kuna but you can bargain.

Does anyone know if buses even meet the ferry that arrives at 10pm-ish? I'm arriving on that ferry (on a Tuesday), but have rented an apartment in Hvar Town and wasn't sure if, at that time of night, I would have to arrange for another way of transport to Hvar Town. Thanks for any info.

Sorry for hi-jakcing your post bodhijack!

Here is my situation....I have booked a room in Dubrovnik(thanks to a recommendation on this link) Sept 16,17. I want to take our car(rented in Venice)to Hvar on the 18th. Is this possible and can I book in advance and cost? We have an apt. reserved for the 18,19(again thankyou all on the Croatian link) and then we will leave on the 20th to Split, again using a car/passenger ferry.Any help will be appreciated. We will then begin our journey back to Venice. I havent heard much on the link re: Northern Coast of Croatia. Anyone been?Suggestions?

Thanks,Pepnjak

You certainly can take your car by ferry from Dubrovnik to Hvar: you can book in advance. Here's the ferry company's website:

Very efficient and reasonably priced. The same ferry service goes Dubrovnik/Korcula/Hvar/Split. I am not sure but in mid-September I'd guess you'd not need to book in advance. We were there week before last and got onto the ferry of our choice when pitching up two hours before: September is likely to be the same, I understand. Enjoy - great country and great people.
