hvar or korcula

Hi all, I need help deciding between Hvar and Korcula. We can't do both as the car ferry schedule does not work for us.
Thanks.

I think they are similar, in that both offer one stunning small town (though Stari Grad on Hvar has fans as well), and the rest of each island is gorgeous too. Hvar has lavendar fields, Korcula has vineyards. Both have rocky hillsides, amazing views. To me, it is a toss-up if you choose one or the other. Important though: what time of year?
Korcula may have an edge on restaurants, and Hvar can be overpriced.
I assume you are traveling between Split and Dubrovnik?
Korcula can be reached by sea or by bus from Dubrovnik--a very scenic ride.
Hvar has many connections with Split of course.
Or are you driving the entire way?

Hi Yorkshire,
Thanks for your reply. We arrive Croatia in May'08. I have discovered an alternative ferry route but it seems to be a very long way just to see Korcula.
Fr. Succaraj port(hvar)-ferry-Drvenik, then drive to Ploce, then ferry-Orebic-ferry Korcula. Whataya think? Is Korcula worth it?

We intended on going to both but fell in love with Hvar and ended up staying there longer. Lovely place. Great restaurants. Good night life. Nice cafes.

So you are moving south from Split and leaving Croatia from Dubrovnik?
I'd say it depends on how much time you have. It is most likely preferably to spend more time on one island, soaking it in.
But if you are planning on taking the ferry from Stari Grad to Dbv, be warned it is very long--it is almost quicker to return to Split and drive south, depending on traffic--which should not be bad in May.

Did you also check to see if there are ferries from Split to Vela Luka (Korcula)?--the drive across Korcula is much much easier than the drive across Hvar. Good Luck--you'll be happy whichever you choose.

There is also a ferry in summer between Drvenik and Korcula. This is run by Mediteranska Plovidba and is one of the few Croatian ferries not run by Jadrolinija. Timetables and details of all other transport links to Korcula are on www.korcula.net/grad/pitanja/index.html
