I have experienced first hand a couple of major hurricanes in my life.
Its times like these that bring out the best in people. Even cynics have to be amazed at total strangers helping other total strangers, even risking their lives to help others.
These disasters remind you that compared to human life, all else pales in comparison.
Our thoughts and prayers are certainly with those people in Florida. I hope they receive the same help from neighboring states we here in Louisiana received in the aftermath of Lilli in October, 2002.

Yes, I hope all you in the path of this storm are doing OK. I actually posted something yesterday on another post (that Flygirl posted to and said something to the effect that it's not a big storm, whatever) and that has disappeared.
Hope you all stay safe.

Sorry, I just saw the "Floridians Checking In" thread on the US board -- if anyone wants to hear some hair-raising, direct experience.
skatterfly, it was Spygirl, not flygirl. Just to keep the record straight.

Many of us regulars from the Europe board have been posting our hurricane messages on the US board. I suggest you look there for more comments and the "checking in" of Florida regulars.
The images we've seen today on TV are mind-boggling. I'm exhausted from clean-up at our condos -- with much more to do, but at least we can now get into our garages. And we are lucky to have power in our immediate neighborhodd, although even as close as Fifth Avenue South is still without power on the South side (but power working on the North side).

Sognatrice, still hoping to hear froma few others , then will breath more easily.
Even without all the strong hurricane winds, there will be some pretty heavy flooding going on
Even way up north where I live, we may get up to 4"rain tomorrow , and in the past 2 days we have had at least
3-4" . i can't imagine the coastal areas mid-atlantic .
Thanks to thoseb , Marilyneing the first, to click on that lightbulb in my head about checking the US board!
Big duh to me
I was able to find out specific info about an area I was worried about, and it was good to read reports of those checking in.

My thoughts are with all of you who have been impacted by this dangerous storm. It is good to hear from you to let us know that you are okay. If we could all come and help you and others clean up, Patrick, I'm sure we would. Take care.

Nanb, I know flooding is a hard thing too, and pray things work out for you.
Still keeping all in my thoughts, and thanks for the suggestion on the US board. I'll check in there.
Patrick, I'll also get in line behind Marianna to say that I wish I could come down there and lend a hand directly to help out somehow. I know the aftermath is and will be exhausting.
I still have memories of 2 Red Cross Ladies from the South who stayed in my NYC neighborhood 3 years ago to help us through a hard time, their warm and gracious spirits made a huge difference to everyone-they are still remembered here, and some day I hope to repay that gift.
