Huelva - Jamon Iberico

I read an article a few years back in a magazine about a village/town near Huelva that is supposed to have the worlds best Jamon Iberico. I have searched for the article on-line but I have not been able to find it. I wonder if anyone can help me out with which place it might be?

4 minutes eks?

Sheesh that good - so is Iberico - mmmmmmm

ekscrunchy Mar 5th, 2009 04:01 AM

I remembered that article! Next time I will try to trim the response time to 3 minutes!!

Maribel Mar 5th, 2009 12:53 PM

eks,
Speaking of pork and Spain, have you read the Lisa Abend article on Extremadura, "A World Away" in this month's Gourmet?

ekscrunchy Mar 5th, 2009 03:21 PM

Maribel...I did read it. I was so excited to see an entire article on Extremadura! In fact, I was on the verge of cancelling my Gourmet subscription because there are too many pretty photo shoots and complicated recipes, and not enough travel stories. With that article they have stayed my hand for the moment. I don't know why they did not mention Extremadura, or Spain,on the binding. But I wrote it on mine so I can find it in the disorganized stacks that are threatening to invade every room of the ekscrunchy home.

The town is Jabugo. Personally I think jamon iberico is overrated. Tastes soapy.

amsdon Mar 5th, 2009 05:42 PM

Uh oh....I think I hear Scrunchita
in the distance.....I can only imagine her reaction

:-"

and dagnabbit! I think we just cancelled it too.

Aduchamp1 Mar 5th, 2009 06:54 PM

Personally I think jamon iberico is overrated. Tastes soapy.

I have had my mouth washed out with jamon Iberico many times.

Robert2533 Mar 5th, 2009 07:11 PM

"Personally I think jamón ibérico is overrated. Tastes soapy". Really?

It's obvious you have yet to acquire an application of the world's best jamón, Jamón Salamanca (www.jamonsalamanca.com/).

ekscrunchy Mar 6th, 2009 04:28 AM

Hear, hear, Everyone:

I hereby declare the word "Dagnabbit" to be the best of the week. From now on I will attempt to work this word into my speech at least once per day!

Dagnabbit!!!! This talk of jamon Iberico tasting soapy is crazy! But I've heard people say the same about cilantro, which I can never get enough of!

amsdon Mar 6th, 2009 06:00 AM

I will be happy to take anyone's soapy iberico castoffs
just as I am their leftover Aqua de Sevilla perfume.....

Maribel Mar 6th, 2009 12:02 PM

Hi eks and amsdon,
Yep, the last time I ate a sliver of Joselito, I said: "Dagnabbit!!! This tastes just like a bar of Heno de Pravia!" :-D

ekscrunchy Mar 6th, 2009 12:08 PM

Dagnabbit if it doesn't, now that you mention it, Maribel!

Let me dig out those boxes of Magno La Toja. They can tide me over until I get my hands on some Joselito!

Huelva (City & Province) is reputed to be the least expensive place to visit in Spain. When you visit, be sure to stop at el Santuario de la Virgen del Rocio, just South of Almonte and bordering on the Donaña Wildlife Preserve. It's where Processions from Sevilla end up during the feria del Campo the weekend of Pentecost.

If you get to Mazagón, try the Ice Cream. Relatives told us that the people who make Turrones in Alicante come down to Huelva and make Turron-flavored Ice Cream in the Summertime

As for the Jamon Iberico, you can buy it in the open market in the City of Huelva; and the vendors will gladly slice a piece for you so you can tell if it's too soapy tasting for you. And it doesn't have to come from Jabugo to be Jamon Iberico.

ComfyShoes Mar 6th, 2009 03:23 PM

Scrunch and Maribel, That is an informative, excellent article as I have never felt emotions for a pig before. :)

Maribel Mar 6th, 2009 03:45 PM

And Jabugo is not the only "jamón ibérico de bellota" producing town. There's Guijuelo in the Salamanca province, Montánchez in the Dehesa de Extremadura (Cáceres province), And the Los Pedroches area of Córdoba produces an excellent jamón ibérico.

ComfyShoes Mar 6th, 2009 03:57 PM

Stop tempting me :) No trip to Spain in the next 12 months for me, although that means an almost certain trip in 2010. Then again, if the airfares were to be just right, one never knows.

amsdon Mar 6th, 2009 07:02 PM

Hi Comfy long time no "see" or is that Sí...?

Hurok Girls you make me laugh. I think I will look for that small black bar of Maja soap I store in an old suitcase with all the articulos del baile from yesteryear...BECAUSE TENGO HAMBRE!

ojander Mar 6th, 2009 10:23 PM

Thanks for all the replies. It was not the article that I had read but it did definitely answer my question (as well as wet my appetite). Can't wait to go/eat.

Robert2533 Mar 6th, 2009 10:55 PM

It looks like I'll have to open one of the packages of bellota I've been hoarding before heading back to Spain next week. All this talk has made me hungry!

ComfyShoes Mar 7th, 2009 04:49 AM

amsdon, hello (very busy due to work related trips... which is great given the economy). What is "hurok"? Ojander, wet is whet although whet, hopefully, wets one's appetite too.

amsdon Mar 7th, 2009 06:37 AM

The reference to Hurok is a little ongoing joke I share with Maribel & Scrunchy. Sol Hurok was an impresario who managed many great artists & produced many great concerts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sol_Hurok. The joke is I periodically refer to us as the Hurok girls or Hurok sisters since we seem to be concert going, foodies (and jamon loving at that!) I am afraid any Hurok sisietrs adventure would have to be led by Maribel. who else?

amsdon Mar 7th, 2009 07:16 AM

I might add though we've never even met!

ComfyShoes Mar 8th, 2009 02:57 PM

amsdon, Too bad Fodors doesn't give out money for cool travels otherwise I would nominate you, Scrunchy and Maribel. With your knowledge of Flamenco and scruchy's ability to sample cuisine every few weeks and, let's face it, Maribel has literally written a book (or two or three!) on travels, it could be an interesting trip report read!!

amsdon Mar 8th, 2009 09:21 PM

And you of course "Renaissance Man."

ComfyShoes Mar 9th, 2009 09:21 AM

Thanks, amsdon, very flattering (which I appreciate) but you guys are better off as a gang of knowledgeable experts/ladies :) Have fun.
