Huelva - Jamon Iberico
 
I read an article a few years back in a magazine about a village/town near Huelva that is supposed to have the worlds best Jamon Iberico. I have searched for the article on-line but I have not been able to find it. I wonder if anyone can help me out with which place it might be?

Speaking of pork and Spain, have you read the Lisa Abend article on Extremadura, "A World Away" in this month's Gourmet?

Maribel...I did read it. I was so excited to see an entire article on Extremadura! In fact, I was on the verge of cancelling my Gourmet subscription because there are too many pretty photo shoots and complicated recipes, and not enough travel stories. With that article they have stayed my hand for the moment. I don't know why they did not mention Extremadura, or Spain,on the binding. But I wrote it on mine so I can find it in the disorganized stacks that are threatening to invade every room of the ekscrunchy home.

The town is Jabugo. Personally I think jamon iberico is overrated. Tastes soapy.

Personally I think jamon iberico is overrated. Tastes soapy.

I have had my mouth washed out with jamon Iberico many times.

It's obvious you have yet to acquire an application of the world's best jamón, Jamón Salamanca (www.jamonsalamanca.com/).

I hereby declare the word "Dagnabbit" to be the best of the week. From now on I will attempt to work this word into my speech at least once per day!

Dagnabbit!!!! This talk of jamon Iberico tasting soapy is crazy! But I've heard people say the same about cilantro, which I can never get enough of!

Yep, the last time I ate a sliver of Joselito, I said: "Dagnabbit!!! This tastes just like a bar of Heno de Pravia!" :-D

Huelva (City & Province) is reputed to be the least expensive place to visit in Spain. When you visit, be sure to stop at el Santuario de la Virgen del Rocio, just South of Almonte and bordering on the Donaña Wildlife Preserve. It's where Processions from Sevilla end up during the feria del Campo the weekend of Pentecost.

If you get to Mazagón, try the Ice Cream. Relatives told us that the people who make Turrones in Alicante come down to Huelva and make Turron-flavored Ice Cream in the Summertime

As for the Jamon Iberico, you can buy it in the open market in the City of Huelva; and the vendors will gladly slice a piece for you so you can tell if it's too soapy tasting for you. And it doesn't have to come from Jabugo to be Jamon Iberico.

And Jabugo is not the only "jamón ibérico de bellota" producing town. There's Guijuelo in the Salamanca province, Montánchez in the Dehesa de Extremadura (Cáceres province), And the Los Pedroches area of Córdoba produces an excellent jamón ibérico.

Stop tempting me :) No trip to Spain in the next 12 months for me, although that means an almost certain trip in 2010. Then again, if the airfares were to be just right, one never knows.

Thanks for all the replies. It was not the article that I had read but it did definitely answer my question (as well as wet my appetite). Can't wait to go/eat.
