Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc Sold Out - Alternative Suggestion in the Marais?
 

My beloved Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc is not available for our dates in October. Can anyone suggest an alternative in the Marais within the same budget range? (HJdA was at 89 Euro for a double en suite). Thanks in advance.

When I went in May the Jeanne d'Arc was also full, as was my second choice the Sevigny

I ended up staying at the Alhambra, a bit further north but with excellent bus and Metro links. It was actually one of the recommended hotels here in fodors Paris destination section. For the price it is very good value, and the courtyard garden is lovely.

Another hotel on my budget list is close to the Bastille

All these are well under 100 euros a night.

There aren't very many 2* hotels in the Marais any more, and the ones that exist are often above 100 euro in price, at least in high season like October is.

The best I can think of is the Saintonge which does have doubles for 90 euro in October.

I was just looking for a hotel there and didn't find a lot of great deals, I think the Saintonge was the best bet that looked decent in a budget price range. I have read decent reviews about it, probably better than the Vieux Marais, not sure. You won't have much choice now, though. Here's another budget choice, the Grand Hotel Malher (I think 2*), but it is more like 135 euro plus.

You might try Hotel Caron de Beaumarchais a 3* just off rue de Rivoli with rooms starting at 130e/night. It's charming, though the rooms are small. Short walk to metro at Hotel de Ville, St-Paul, as well as St-LouisIs. and a host of Marais attractions.

If one was willing to go up that much in price, you could consider the Bretonnerie, also, with std. doubles at 135 euro

I think the Caron de Beamarchais only has ground floor rooms at 130 euro.

Julia, can you tell me a little bit about the surroundings of the Alhambra? It is a little further north than we were considering, but the hotel sounds like a good budget option.

Some of the other suggestions are nice alternatives, but as stated in my original post we are trying to keep with (or close to) our original budget of the Hôtel Jeanne d'Arc.

We stayed here many years ago, and it needed some refurbishing at the time, but seems to me I've heard they've done that. Great location.

The Alhambra is in a pretty good area - however on the map the street is in 3 sections. When I came out of the Metro I turned the wrong way, up towards Republique, and the street gets progressively drearier, dingier, and worse! But the lowest section of the street, the one the Alhambra is on - the one closest to the Marais - is actually quite nice. I am a single woman traveller, and I felt perfectly safe and secure returning late at night to the Alhambra from the bus or Metro. (Admittendly I wouldn't have been so happy if the hotel had been at the other end of the street!) But I would - and do- recommend the Alhambra for a budget hotel. The rooms aren't over-large, the shower cubicle is on the small side, but it's as good as plenty of other Parisian hotels which cost a lot more.

You can look on the ratp website, there are some great bus links, it's about 5 minutes to the Marais and I had not trouble getting around from there. I would stay there again, definitely.
