How would you spend Bastille Day in Paris?

Coucou, mon amis! We will be in Paris (we are staying at a hotel in the Rue Champs de Mars) on Bastille Day. I know that there will be fireworks at the Eiffel Tower at 11 PM, and we will have a great view from our hotel room. But, what else should we do, or not do, on Bastille Day?

We've been in Paris for <<fête nationale de la République française>> on multiple occasions, and usually head to the Champs de Mars to watch the fireworks along with a gazillion others. Yes, it's touristy but it's also fun. The following may not pertain if you peep from your hotel, but here's what we've learned:
  • bring a blanket to sit on during the festivities
  • bring some wine and bottles of water
  • bring some snacks that will stand up to potential heat
  • expect crowds in virtually every restaurant within a mile or two radius of Trocadero. Once we actually got seated at a place that by the time the waitress got to us she said they had run out of food!!.
  • expect crazy crowds in the Metro. Not sure how COVID precautions will affect this, but it can get really crazy.
  • the parade is pretty militaristic, if you don't get off on all that weaponry skip it
  • the Bal des Pompiers can be a blast on the evening of 13th July

I would definitely recommend a firemen's ball for the 13th -- or even the 14th after the fireworks; they can go on all night. Last year they were cancelled.

Drinking.
King's Day in Amsterdam was not a lot of fun for those not drinking. Way too many crowds, noise and general chaos.
