How would you spend 7 days in Salzburg?

Me and my husband would be visiting this beautiful city of Salzburg for christmas that is from the 21st December till the 28th. Can anyone give some useful tips on how to spend 7 days in Salzburg?

Hi Karen,

I was in Salzburg this summer and loved it and the surrounding area. I know you have been researching this topic (If you are a new poster, you may not know that you can click on your name and see all your previous posts.)

I wonder if you would share some of your ideas of what you and your husband are thinking about so far? We could give you more specific information that way?

One restaurant we enjoyed was St. Peter Stiftskeller, very traditional and lovely restaurant next to the church with Austrian decor and located in an historic building.

Best wishes, SusanEva

Hi KarenM26,

I spent a week in Salzburg in Jan a few years ago -- here's what I did:

Day-trip to Kitzbuehel
Day-trip to Innsbruck
Day-trip to Zell-am-See
Walking around the mountain above town
Exploring the old town, shopping, etc

You should find plenty to keep you busy! The Christmas decorations will be beautiful!!

Hi Karen,

OK, sounds nice! You will have more to do than you can choose from. We loved walking around the city and stopping in shops, cafes and churches. In addition to the small restaurant near St. Peters mentioned earlier, we enjoyed lunch at the historic Cafe Tomaselli, and stopped again for coffee and desert.

Music is so central to the heritage of Salzburg, look for concerts or impromptu events. For example, in the summer, there were many student musicians playing in public areas, so we stopped to listen and bought their CD's (10euro). There will be schedules for holiday music in all the churches, and your hotel should be able to help you find this information.

See a concert at either Mirabell Palace or at the Fortress, or the Marionette Theatre. Look on the web here, if you haven't booked already: http://www.viennaticketoffice.com/salzburg_en.php

Or at this site:

The Christmas markets will still be open, so this will keep you busy. I don't know if the horse carriage tours are available, but we liked the one that went to Hellbrun Palace, about one hour through lovely countryside.

We took the "Sound of Music" bus tour and enjoyed it. If you don't have a car, it's a great way to see some of the lake area and with stops at Wolfgangsee and Mondsee, you will see some beautiful scenery.

Has anyone gone tobogganing or on a sleigh ride as we are non-skiers and we would love to experience fun in the snow.
