John, I'm not sure I understand your question. Minors travel all the time without having the police "respond." What would make the police "respond" in this case. Could you elaborate?

Your first concern should be "How will the airline respond?" Many, particularly the international lines, are not allowing minors to travel unaccompanied. I'd direct your question to the airline you'll book the child on and seek their advice.

Is it possible that John Swain here is the minor in question? (His e-mail address defintely looks like a 16-year old boy's!)
John, do your parents know you're planning a trip to Germany alone?

About fifteen years ago when I was travelling underage, there was certainly no paperwork needed for any travel within Europe. I don't see any sensible reason why a sixteen-year old shouldn't be allowed to enter Germany and travel on his own. Of course his passport might be checked at arrival but that's about it.

I would be highly surprised if anything had changed about it but to be sure, I would advice you to either phone the airline or the German embassy.

I realize that kids are growing up fast these days but to let a 16 year old travel to another continent by himself shows a complete lack of common sense and parenting skills of his parents. What if something happens to him, he gets abducted or in trouble, or needs medical attention, are you so sure that your child will know how to respond to an emergency especially in a foreign country? I would give this some serious thought before you let your child travel by himself. In two years he will be of legal age to vote and serve in the military, he will also be responsible for himself legally. You might want to think about letting him do the european thing when he is considered an adult. NOW for all those posters who are going to post nasty responses to this post, too bad,I stand by my opinion that this is irresponsible parenting

Hey, the original post says that the traveller in question is travelling from the USA on a German passport. Presumably then he's a German citizen currently living in the USA, in which case he probably speaks German, has lived in Germany, probably has family there. So it's really a legal question - can he travel alone (without an adult) without running into any red tape? And really, the biggest issue is with the airline - will they allow an unaccompanied minor to fly on the planned route? Some will and some won't and some only allow it on direct flights, so check with the airline. Immigration shouldn't be bothered as long as the kid has a German (or in fact any EEA) passport, so no issue there, and the police won't come into the picture unless the traveller appeals to them for help.

XXX - do you think it's possible that only the air travel portion of the trip is in question? He could live in the same city as the airport and simply take a bus from there to his house. Most 16 year olds could certainly handle that.

I don't think English is John Swain's first language, so maybe his question isn't completely clear to those who feel the need to read it literally. He simply wants to know if a minor can travel internationally without any problems with immigration. Can anyone else help him?

It is not unusal for 16 year olds to travel freely within Germany, many do.

However, that being said, German police are not preoccupied with PC manners and will stop and interogate anyone at length that looks "funny".
Better be prepared.
