How to unlock a mobile phone

For less than $40, I recently purchased a Sagem myx-1 mobile pay-as-you-go phone from Amazon.uk and had it delivered to the apartment we rented while in London. It worked like a charm; however, it is locked to Vodaphone. Though the rates in England are great, they are not so in Western Europe. I have tried to find info on the web regarding unlocking it so that I could use country specific SIM cards in the future. It appears that it is possible but requires some sort of cable. My next trip is likely to involve either Paris, Prague, or Rome. Does anyone know if a mobile phone shop in these cities are likely to be able to unlock it for me if I purchase a SIM card from them and, if so, how much it might cost? Thanks.

If you walk down Oxford Street, you will find oodles and oodles of store fronts that advertise they can unlock most mobile phones at good prices.

Two places I know exist is a large store across from the Cumberland Hotel at Marble Arch and then an internet cafe along Charing Cross Rd. about two blocks down from Oxford Street across from a Saintsbury grocery store. I saw another couple of store fronts saying they unlock phones for £8...

Sagem's usually do need a cable to unlock. The easiest to unlock are Nokias where the calculator to determine unlocking codes are freely available on the web.

Too bad there are still paranoid companies out there who deliberately try to defeat the purpose of GSM by locking their phones. Did you know it is against the law in Italy to lock phones? Too bad these laws are not universal.

Hi S,

Go to www.google.com and enter "unlock Sagem my-x1", you find that it will cost about $200.

If you go to www.mobalrental.com you can buy a Nokia for $49.
For $4 you can unlock it at www.mobileliberation.com

You can buy a SIM card when you get to your destination.

I'd keep looking on line if I were you. Two minutes research found an unlocking service for £15:

Hi stares,

The link provided by robe is useful if you are in the UK and can deliver them the phone by post.

Their online system doesn't cover the MYX 1.

Jeez, aren't we in a pissy mood this evening?

I was merely pointing out that unlock services abound, and not all of them cost an arm and a leg.

I'd hit the USENET groups long before I paid anyone to unlock a phone.

Robes, methinks you're a bit grumpy, too. How about telling the viewers out there how to use usenet?

My dear robe,

I fear you are inferring something that I didn't intend to imply.

Wow, very ingenious of a brand-new member to dig up a 5-year old thread to post about a website.
