how to travel from Amsterdam to Swizterland and Italy, end Oct 2012

Me and my boyfriend are planning a 10 days trip in the last week of October 2012. We will be departing from Amsterdam and planning to travel to Switzerland and Italy from there.

For now we are planning to stay 2 days in Swizterland and the rest of the trip to Italy covering Milan, Venice and Rome.

Any advise on the best routes to travel between these countries/cities or the 'must-see' in each place would be much appreciated!

You could take an overnight train from Amsterdam to Zurich and then head for the fantastic Jungfrau Region around Interlaken - to many the essence of the Alpine Wonderland we have etched in our minds' eyes of Switzerland - this area will most fulfill it and has so many varied great things to see and do.

This area is also about half-way between Amsterdam to Italy - smack right on the main rail line between Germany and Italy - actually just a 20-min train ride to Interlaken off it from Spiez.

Then go on to Italy via Brig and Milan - change in Milan for Venice, Florence, Rome, etc.

if not taking the overnight train then you'll spend all day getting to Switzerland - overnight train saves a night in a hotel and time.

For lots of great info on European trains and overnight trains check out these IMO fantastic sites - www.seat61.com (good info on online discounts on the Amsterdam to Zurich train) and www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

Score some deep discounted tickets for Amsterdam to Switzerland (which is a German ICN train going mainly thru Germany) at www, bahn.de - discounted tickets are limited in numbers and can sell out quickly - are non-changeable nor refunded so be sure - but can save a ton of money over full fare or just showing up in Amsterdam and buying a ticket.
