How to split 10 days between Barcelona and Sevilla
 

Hi all,

I am planning a trip to Europe in late September/ early October and I plan to spend 10 or 11 days in Spain. We will be coming from Zurich, so a direct flight into Barcelona seems to be the cheapest and quickest way of getting there. I also have a flight out of Barcelona the last day. We are a couple in our 20s and are okay taking the time to travel to different parts of the country, since I'm not sure when we will ever get back. I am thinking of spending the first five days in Barcelona, then taking the train to Sevilla and splitting the next five days between Sevilla and Grenada. We will either fly or take the train from Sevilla to Barcelona on the last day.

Do you have suggestions on the best way to travel between Sevilla and Grenada, and Sevilla and Barcelona? Also, are there any other recommended plans or cities in these areas that you would suggest? I have certainly done research on Spain but there is only so much I can learn from a travel book. Our main interests are the culture, beautiful scenery and architecture, and food and wine (museums and ruins are not our priorities). I realize it would be smarter to spend the entire time in one area of Spain, but my husband is dying to see Barcelona (I've been there twice and love it) and I would love to spend time in Sevilla/Grenada (we've never been).

I would look into the possibility of flying between Barcelona and Seville or Granada; Vueling Airlines will almost undoubtedly have cheap flights to both destinations from BCN.

I suspect you'll get plenty of feedback about how much time to spend IN Seville. Because of my own background I found a lot of the architecture in Seville very familiar but I certainly enjoyed both the Alcazar (which ended up being somewhat similar to the Alhambra) and the cathedral. But three days in Seville was plenty for me; I wish I had spent more time IN Granada than my simple visit to the Alhambra.

I would have spent 4-5 days in Barcelona and the rest in the South with most of the time in wonderful Sevilla, the undisputed queen of the cities in the South. Take your time to explore the different neighbourhoods outside the beautiful but very touruisty Santa Cruz district. My favourite areas are Triana, a cradle of flamenco culture, right on the other side of the city river Guadalquivir, the central and local feel Arenal area, and the Centro/San Lorenzo/Alameda area a little north of the Cathedral, the Alcázar and the most obvious sights. In all these areas you'll find excellent tapas bars and restaurants and have plenty of opportunity to experience the local atmosphere and culture.

Perhaps experience real deal flamenco in intimate Casa de la Memória in C/Cuna, 6 right in the centre of town. An art form very important for Sevilla and all of Andalucía. Popular with tourists, but only great artists perform here. No food, no drinks, just flamenco. Entrance 16€. Changing artists every night.

Pastora Galván from Sevilla was voted best female flamenco dancer by Spanish critics 2010, and she has used to dance here about once a week for a long time.

Take the Alsa bus between Sevilla and Granada. Ten daily departures, some 3 hours and 21€. http://www.alsa.es/en/

Fly Vueling to Granada for 2 nights. Bus or train to Seville for 4-5 nights. Make a daytrip to Cordoba or Ronda or Cadiz,. High speed train or fly back to Barcelona. Perfect trip!

Thanks for the help! I extended the trip to 12 days, and booked a flight from BCN to Seville, then Granada to BCN 7 days later. I plan to spend 3 nights in Seville, 2 nights in Malaga and 2 nights in Granada.

When in Málaga, you should have some Conchas Finas, pure sea! A Málaga pride, and you'll find it in every good tapas bar and marisquería.
