How to spend ten nights in Hungary?

My husband and I will be in Hungary in August for ten nights.
We are planning to spend 5 nights in Budapest and another 5 nights to see other parts of the country. We are very active people and love to hike or walk a lot and see villages and get to know the culture and the people. We love scenic places and nature more than museums and churches.
Please give us some ideas.
We have traveled in Europe extensively and always rented a car. Should we rent a car to go outside Budapest?
Thank you.

We went about 5 years ago.
GREATLY enjoyed Budapest.
Enjoyed Eger, a day and a night. Could've done two.
Stopped at a "folk village" about halfway; quite unimpressed.
With more time, might have explored a mountainy/hilly area east of Eger, which portended hiking, wine, etc.
If you google "spa hungary" you get some interesting hits.

Eger is a nice town, Gyor for a 'real' town, Sopron is also worthy of a visit with some hiking potential.

August will be very busy with tourists but the Balaton area is great...I love Tihany and Keszthely for the churches, Heviz for the spa. Also the Buk mountain area between Eger and Miskloc is just beautiful. Have a grand time.
