Hi there - I'm going from memory (Sept, 2005), but you should be able to get a cab from Iraklio to Knossos for much less then that. Once there, pony up about 8 euro per person for a 5-10 person tour with one of the tour guides at the entrance.

If you want to see Knossos, I would also probably get a taxi. The bus is only a few Euro for a round trip, but I imagine it would take a little longer than going by taxi.

Other than Knossos, the Archaeological Museum is a nice stop and shouldn't take too long.

I was in Iraklio Sept. 24, 2006. Take a cab to Knossos, and by all means get a guide at the entrance. Marinella was our guide and she, 100% Minoan, was most knowledgeable and excellent(10 euro and group was no more than 15). Spent the entire morning there at King Minos' Palace. The Archaeological Museum in Iraklio is huge, spent more than 2 hours.
Both are absolutely fantastic.

Alas, the Archaeological Museum has just closed for renovations; no date yet for reopening. If you're interested in art, take a look into the tiny church of St Minas, next to the Cathedral. The icons here are very old - for me, the most beautiful I've ever seen in Greece. For refreshment I can recommend the Kentro cafe on Plateia Eleftherias (Freedom Square).

After trying vainly to get info about the Iraklion Archeological Museum, I spoke to the Greek National Tourist office in NYC... I was told there would be some "arrangement" for exhibiting the most important museum items at an Iraklion Location, not yet announced. My guess is that the many cruise lines screamed objection to this open-ended unavailability of a key element of their Crete stop.
