How to spend a Sunday in Zurich

As part of a week-long trip to Switzerland, my husband and I will have only one full day--a Sunday--to spend in Zurich. I would love to shop, but understand stores are closed on Sunday. What do you suggest we do instead?

We strolled along the lakefront with the locals, who descend there en masse on Sundays, and took a sightseeing tour of the city.

Fortunately we arrived on Saturday shortly before the stores closed, and I managed, in a short time, to get to 2 chocolate shops. We all have our priorities.

You can shop in the so called "Shopville" in the basement of the main railway station (Hauptbahnhof). It is open on Sundays, too. I use to buy cheese, dried meat, salami, chocolate there on Sundays. Marinello is a great deli there.

The museums are open on Sundays. If the weather doesn't co-operate see the Kunsthaus, Museum Rietberg (nice park also), one of the University museums (like the museum on Medical history) or so. And, of course, if the weather is good, then stroll along the lakeside promenades. Zürichhorn with Chinese garden is nice. Or the Botanical garden.

And what about a boat cruise on the lake? It takes close to 2 hours to Rapperswil and spend a relaxed afternoon in that charming medieval town.

Or go to one of the viewing points above the city: Uetliberg (train from Hauptbahnhof), Rigiblick (funicular), enjoy the view from the Polyterrasse by the Tech College (ETH, funicular from Central). Lindenhof on the left bank of the Limmat river.

What about the churches? Grossmünster, Fraumünster, St. Peter.
