How to spend 3 days in Luxembourg?
We decided to skip Spain and added Luxembourg. We will be leaving by train from Brussels and staying in Luxembourg city. We have 3 days and will have A car. We want to see: WWI AND WWII sites, scenery, castles, wine country, forests, rivers, mountains. lakes. Where should we go to see these things and what shouldn't we miss? Thanks!!

I am bringing this topic back up to get some ideas. Thanks!!!

Well right close to Luxembourg City is the Hamm Military Cemetery, a U.S. run property where many GIs and also Blood and Guts George Patton are buried. As usual a very moving place to visit.
|
I had the unfortunate chance of visiting Luxembourg city twice, once by car and the other by train, one night stay was more than plenty for me, it just didn't offer much reason for me to stay longer. The city itself felt rather non descript to me.
|
the Grand Duchy itself however is very romantic to me - pastoral, forests, castle-studden - cutish towns like Vianden and Clervaux - do not judge Luxembourg by Luxembourg City, where one day is mroe than enough for me too.

You may want to look at Echternach.

Echternach is a lovely town and would make an enjoyable diversion during your stay in Lux. |
Also just over the border (no formalities) lies the Belgian Ardenne region with many underground caves and old volcanic lakes in the Eifel in Germany plus old Imperial city of Trier and Moselle valley.

Luxembourg is small. Very small, so you can see it all in 3 days. I agree with betty about Echternach - it is a lovely town and I would base there - it is a good central location. Drive to Vianden and you will be rewarded as you approach with a fairy tale view of its castle on the hill. Spend some time in Vianden itself, it is a very nice little old walled town, and visit the castle. As others have said, Luxembourg city is not much of an attraction. The beauty of Luxembourg is in its countryside.

To give you a comparative idea of its size, Luxembourg is about 200 sq miles smaller than Rhode Island.
