Re-read Matt's post. At least 2.5 hrs by train Bologna-Siena via Florence - no direct train. And trains deposit you at the bottom of the hill Siena gloriously crowns - meaning a bus link or long walk to the top.

Never mind. I read this wrong. Bologna to Florence about an hour by train.

It turns out Bologna to Siena is about 3 hours by train.

Looks like all roads lead to Florence in Tuscany.

Yes, thanks PalQ.

I think that I'll have to stick with a Saturday plan if I go to Siena.

I'm afraid that I'll have to top this (one last time?).

The next bus after 10:10 on Saturday is 12:10 from Siena to Florence.

Is that correct?

I'm looking at the Sita schedule:

111 - The next one I see is the 11.40 bus via Poggibonsi (- arriving Florence 13.15) - or the 12.10 express bus you mention (- arr.13.25).

Alternatively there's a direct train at 11.00, arriving Florence 12.43.

Hope this helps ...

I'm thinking of changing my itinerary (oh dear, I hear).

Back to the original question -- is there public transportation between Bologna and Siena (that doesn't require going through Florence)?

When I searched I didn't think that this was possible, but then, maybe someone here knows a way.

Thanks.

Forget it. I've looked at a map of Tuscany:

Bologna -> Siena should go through Florence. I don't think there's any other way.
