How to get to Schloss Schoenbrunn?

I am planning to visit Wien-Austria next month (May'02) just for 3 days and trying to have reliable info regarding the following:

(a) how to get to Schloss Schoenbrunn from the inner stadt of Wien? and how much the transportation cost?
(b) how much the entry ticket to Schloss Schoenbrunn? is there any additional charge for looking the Schloss' rooms?
(c) please tell me any other things that you may think could assist me.

Thanks so much for your help.

Cheers,
Felicity

Felicity,

You can take the subway to Schoenbrunn from the Stephensplatz station, right in front of St. Stephen's Cathedral on the Graben.

Buy a ticket from any tobacconist shop before you go (I don't remember exactly how much the subway costs, but it's quite cheap.) Take the subway from Stephensplatz station to Karlsplatz, where you change for Schoenbrunn.

Several different tickets are sold at Schoenbrunn -- one for a "short" tour of about half the rooms, one for a longer tour of all the rooms, and one that is inclusive of the long tour, the Zoo, Coach House, Gloriette, etc.

I bought the inclusive one last time; as I recall it was about $30 US. If I had it to do again I'd just have bought the long or short tour. (The long tour is VERY long!) Unless you want to see every single thing there (and have all day) I'd recommend you just stroll the grounds and pay individually to the attractions you chose.

By the way, a ticket to the Gloriette, though advertised, is pointless -- it's a restaurant, and no one takes tickets to it!

Schoenbrunn is amazing -- I'm sure you'll have a wonderful time!

You take line U4 to the stop called Schönbrunn, which is very near to the main entrance. The Vienna U Bahn system is so integrated that you can approach from several directions, but ultimately you must get to Längenfeldgasse station. From there U4 takes you to Schönbrunn quickly.
It is a walk of about a half a mile before you get to the entrance. The sight of the palace is quite impressive, depending on how you like that shade of Hapsburg Gold.
I have been through the palace twice, and my memory is dim as to the cost. I recall that the grand tour of 40 rooms with an audio device was 135 schillings when I was there last year. But that is subject to review. Even so, I thought the price relatively cheap for what you see.
There are also some other buildings to visit out on the grounds. The walk up the hill to the Gloriette is invigorating and leads to a good view of the imperial city.
Given the immense size of Schönnbrunn, the 40 room tour only takes in the royal apartments. The remainder of the building is off limits to the usual tourist.
I don't recall the transportation cost, but it is trivial compared to what it cost you to get there. I bought a 72 hour Vienna card. The price includes transportation on the Ubahn and the streetcars and the buses in the city.
Also, it is good for discounts when buying admission to the various museums and art galleries around the city.
I did not tote it up precisely, but I figure the transportation savings plus the admission discounts equalled the cost of the original card. Because we had it, we did not hesitate to ride everywhere and then some.
Check out the website: http://www.schoenbrunn.at/eng/schloss/main.html. Also look at the transport map for Vienna showing the U-Bahn (http://www.metropla.net/eu/vie/wien.htm). The U4 is the green line. Follow it westerwardly to the Schoenbrunn stop.

Regarding the best way to Schloss Shoenbrunn- Take U-3 to the Westbahnhof-then streetcar 58 directly to the front of the Schloss. It saves much walking.
