You can often save money by buying train tickets early like maxima says but you can easily buy those tickets once there -trains would rarely if ever be totally full IME - if the price is full price online you should pay about the same price buying at stations as you go along.
Night trains however can sell out, especially in private compartments IME so to be sure of those book early.

Yes...noted, neckervd...its a psychological thing...lol
Thanks Maxima...i'll have a look
Palenq..I had to look up the Prater///we didn't get to it when I went with just my husband...
it's a park..yes?
might be a very good option...for people watching too...although it would be a Monday
i've been on the wheel..have a pic of us up there lol
ill ask the kids if theyd like to walk in the shadow of my memories lol...( what kid wouldn't want to know every detail of their mommas trip to vienna?)
as always, I'm so grateful for all your suggestions...so many fodorites have helped me plan wonderful trips and I mention this site often to fellow travellers

oh good grief!
the wheel IS in the prater!
I don't remember walking through a leafy park...
just wondering if we walked through an entrance closest to the wheel and circumvented the leafy bit...lol
I'm sure I would've remembered a park otherwise
it was quite empty when we went
no crowds
ill have to look at my photos

Hi Good Folk Of Fodors
Just popped in here just in case some day someone needs advice
we did catch the overnight train from Krakow to vienna
soooo expensive...bought tickets in Australia
it was a bad trip
sooo slow
stopping all of the time
seemed like half the trip was slowing down and then speeding up
we slept in a three berth...all on top of one another and it was the tiniest area to share
hardly slept...felt so close to the rails
( very unlike the comfortable o/n trip to st petes from Moscow)
it was soooo noisy too
rattled and rumbled all night
still it was worth it
got in to vienna at 7 am and ran around like crazy...even up to grinzig and karlsberg up in the hills
it was the best day ever and the kids loved it
one regret..no Spanish horses cos it was a Monday
I missed out again!
caught the 640pm to Salzburg and that was an easy ride
stowing luggage at vienna railway station was easy too
the lockers come in different sizes so we could easily accommodate all of our big luggage
