How to get to Geiranger

Does anyone know how to get to Geiranger by bus in mid-May from the south? I'll be staying somewhere on the Sognefjord, and have been having trouble figuring out how to get to Geiranger from there by public transport at that time of year (some services only seem to run from June-August).

Is this even feasible? How long would the trip take?

You go by ferry from Hellesylt (starts running May 1.), return ticket would be NOK 110,-

There is public bus-service from Stryn and Aalesund to Hellesylt

I guess it depends on where you start from, but I found these routes from Oppdal to Hellesylt where you can transfer to the ferry to Geiranger (you may have to spend the night in Hellesylt?). I'm sure there must be other options (connecting through Stryn?). maybe contact Geiranger tourism office for other options?

Have you considered taking the Hurtigruten from Bergen or Florø overnight to Geiranger?

I'll be coming from the northern side of the Sognefjord, Balestrand-Mundal area, or possibly Aurland on the South side. So I was hoping that there would be a fairly easy way of getting to Geiranger within a day so I don't have to overnight somewhere else on the way.

From Balestrand:
departure 10:15 bus23-516 Balestrand to Førde rb.st. arrive 1220
change to bus22-431 departure Førde rb.st. at 12:30 arrive Hellesylt 16:15-travel time 6hr.

You should be able to connect to the 18:30 ferry to Geiranger, arriving in Geiranger about 19:35.

From Aurland, take the 10:05 bus to Stryn, change to the 15:20 bus to Hellesylt, arrive 16:15 and catch the 18:30 ferry.

Thanks for all the help... In order to shorten travel time, I think that I might try to catch the bus to Stryn in Mundal (Fjaerland). That should be possible, right?

And is there no direct bus to Geiranger in mid-to-late May? I have to get there through Hellesylt and take the ferry?

I'm afraid you have to go by car from Fjærland to the main road, about 3 kilometres. Maybe the hotel you stay at can help you with transportation (or walk). There is a Glacier bus, but do not know when it starts running. The book town of Mundal open Mai 2.

Tourist Info: www.fjaerland.org

The bus to Geiranger and trollstigen starts running June 21. or something but its not direct, you have to change busses. Coming from Stryn you would probably end up going to Hellesylt anyway.

The bus you hook up with is the one coming from Sogndal. But Mundal is probably a better place to stay than Aurland.

Looks like the 1245 weekdays/1205 sat-sun bus goes direct to Hellesylt:

Also possible to catch a bus from Stryn about 1 hour eastwards to Langevatn, and a connection to Geiranger, about 40 minutes from there. The connection road Langevatn - Geiranger is closed during winter, but usually opens around May 1st, depending on what avalanches there are to dig away. www.geiranger.no mentions the possibility and can also be e-mailed for more exact info on schedules etc.

That being said, I'd highly recommend the ferry to/from Hellesylt one way, great views.

Another option, if you're into hiking; you can walk from Stryn to Hellesylt across the Flo mountain and then catch the ferry...about 4-6 hours depending on fitness level and amount of luggage ;-) www.nordfjord.no will be able to tell you more about this option.
