How to get my husband from Rome - Fiumicino airport to Pescara

I am renting a house in Abruzzo for 2 weeks. My husband can only join the second week.
He is flying out a week later than the rest of the group.
Is it easy to get a train from the airport to Pecara, so I could pick him up there? Or is just best to have a driver go get him in Rome?

From he can take a regular commuter train to Roma Tiburtina (NOT Rome Termini), a ride that takes about 45 minutes. At Roma Tiburtina, he can catch a train to Pescara, takes about 4 hours. It looks like he might have 20 minutes to connect at Tiburtina. Unfortunately , there are not fast trains along this route so he will travel on the slowest type of train: R (Regionale). Check schedules at http://www.trenitalia.com/ but use dates for next week since R trains aren't listed very far ahead and the schedule shouldn't change too much.

Sorry, Yvonne, I checked Trenitalia and found that the trains go from Tiburtina, not Termini. (I just rechecked to verify.)

There is bus service between Roma Tiburtina and Pescara on three different companies working in some sort of cooperative fashion (split, not competing, timetable). The journey is 2.5 hours one way, and I think the one-way is something like 15-20 euros. (This does not include the time or cost to get from the airport to Tiburtina.)

The bus company websites are all in Italian, but the third link below gives the timetable for all service by all companies.

Just noticed that the journey can be longer than 2.5 hours depending on the departure time.

Thanks, ellenem, I had asked that my comment be removed, as it wasn't accurate! So, I got to use that :flag comment" icon against myself. :-)

I recently took the train to the Pescara region. Flew into FCO, took the train to Termini and the subway (blue line) to Tiburtina. It was not a fast train but the scenery is beautiful.

Would have considered the bus but couldn't figure out where to purchase a ticket or where to catch the bus.

There are also small planes that travel from FCO to the Pescara airport, I saw some possibilities down in baggage at FCO, but I could't find out anything about them before I left for Rome.

Come to think of it, there is a major bus station across the street from Tiburtina, which might be where he can catch a bus to Pescara.

"lew into FCO, took the train to Termini and the subway (blue line) to Tiburtina."

There is a train line from FCO (not the Leonardo Express) that goes directly to Tiburtina. No need for the metro. It is good to hear someone describe the ride to Pescara, though the bus seems like the faster option.

I took a train ride into deepest tuscany recently; it took quite a long time but it did have the advantage of being able to walk around and use the loos. [if that can be said to be an advantage on a "regionale" train].

being on a bus for 2 1/2 hours is quite a long time - the train ride might be nicer.

but it looks as if there are plenty of options!

Can anyone tell me if Pronto Bus operates on Sunday? If not what is the best way to go fron Fiumcino to Pescara on a Sunday.

Jean Jul 17th, 2012 11:26 AM

Yes.

Click on 'orario/timetable.' Scroll own to second timetable. The columns 'tutti i giorni' are departures on all days of the week.

I have been on the Prontobus webiste and got the schedule. Trying to determine if I can buy tickets ahead of time. Is that possible or just buy when we arrive?

Whatever you do do not take the train unless you enjoy a very long scenic route. The trains between Rome and Pescara date back before the war and they are so old I am not sure which war!

Pronto bus is the best option if departure times coincide with arrival. The alternative is to get to Tiburtina which may also be an attractive option if arrival at Rome is early morning as you would avoid the horrendous traffic at that hour on the GRA which is Rome's ring road. Tiburtina is on the side of Rome which gives you quick access to the Autrotrada for Pescara.

Prontobus departs from the arrival level of Terminal 3 many times during the day to Pescara Train station. Pick up there is easy. The ride is about 3.5 hours.

Train is so much longer especially since you have to get to Tiburtina train station from the airport first.

Have used Prontobus for many years. Reliable, reasonably priced and quick!

Prontobus tickets can be purchased ahead of time or you can just make a reservation and "Pago on borda" -pay cash as you board the bus. Making a reservation is a good idea since during the summer months, the buses can get very busy. Sometimes I make a reservation on two buses since the Alitalia flights arrive at 1:00 and the Prontobus I take to Lanciano, (a little further than Pescara) departs at 2:00. It's a tight window if the flight is a little late or luggage is delayed. If I miss the 2:00, I take the 4:00 to Pescara and then take a regional train to SanVito-Lanciano, my final destination.

This thread is 4 years old, so I'd guess he got to Pescara by now.
