How to get info on train schedules in the Netherlands
 

Need to travel from Amsterdam to Sneek. Would like to do it by bus or train. Are there train stations as confusing as most European ones.

That depends on what you find confusing.

www.ns.nl has a finder service which lists the train destinations and numbers as well as the platform numbers you need. Apparently you would need to change at Amersfoort and Leeuwarden.

But the most convenient one for all train travel in Europe is
http://www.bahn.de (you can choose English)

It gives the schedule from Amsterdam Centraal to Sneek. The easiest connection takes 3hrs and 1 change in Leeuwarden. You could do it in 2,5 hrs, but that requires 3 changes.

What do you mean by 'confusing train stations'?

Long distance travel by bus is not common in the Netherlands.

I don't know what stations are like in the rest of Europe, but we found the train system so easy and efficient that we got a day pass and did a big loop around the country. That was a few years ago, but if it is still the same I would have no worries.

Most train stations have a "big board" that displays all the trains for that day, or perhaps the next several hours' trains for that day. The sign will tell numerous helpful details, such as the end-destination, a train#, departure time and a track/quay #. Sometimes the track# is not posted until a few minutes before departure.

Many stations may have additional signs along the quay that show what trains go thru on that track, are they 'short' or 'long' trains, maybe information about departure times by day (weekends may have more limited service)...
