How to get from Venice to Geneva/Chur? The best way?

Hi.. I am trying to find a route frm Venice to Geneva or Chur and looking for the best possible route. This is becoz I want to take the Glacier Express, or can someone recommend something better? haha. Thanks!!!

If you are talking by rail....train from Venice to Milan. Change in Milan for a train to BRIG. Change in Brig for the Glacier Express to Chur... you'll miss the portions Zermatt-Brig and Chur-St. Moritz but still see plenty of spectacular scenery.

For real, REAL spectacular and if you have the time...train from Venice to Milan; change to a train to Tirano. Take the Bernina Express and make your way to St. Moritz/Chur. Glacier Express from there westbound to Brig, change in Brig for the trip to Geneva.

I took a day train Venice to Geneva (Vevey) that transfered Sion. But it was not a particularly spectacularly scenic route.

Hi Joo,

I second Dukey's route via Tirano and the Bernina Express -- better than the GE I've heard! I know I loved it!

Hey Thanks..

Dukey, is it easy to get the tix.. let's say.. on the day itself or 2 days prior?

Hi again,

Well I'm not Dukey, but I can tell you that I got the tickets and reservations the night before.

I'll defer to Swanday re the ticket purchases. I've only traveled the GE route during the "season" and always ordered tickets in advance.

I have also been told the Bernina Express is more spectacular than the GE (which I have taken four times!!!!) and am in the process of planning a trip from Varenna which would finally incorporate it.

Hi all,

Uh oh. I meant for the BE, not the GE. I've never been on the GE (never had enough time to spend a whole day sitting still on a train!)

Hey thanks!

It's nice knowing that it's really good Dukey, and thanks for the tip swandav.. though I might not have the time to get it the night before, but I think it's bookable online yeah? Hope my friend gets back to me about it cos she's not keen on getting up early in venice.. haha.

Hi..

Sorry, cos it's my first time. I checked with the bahn website, and there are other trains that go up to St Moritz other than the Bernina Express. I guess that they are the regional trains, travelling time about same, so what's the difference? Sorry.. haha

Hi again,

Yes, there are regular, local trains that go that same route over the same tracks.

The BE trains have bigger windows, require reservations, and generally are filled with other foreigners, all enjoying the unique experience. When I did it, I took the BE one way and the local train back. The local train was filled with bored locals reading the newspaper through the gorgeous scenery.

I think I'd just do the local!
