How to get from Split to Hvar to Dubrovnik?

After spending a week in Plitvice Lakes and Istria, we’ll have another week for Hvar and Dubrovnik. We will have a car for the 1st week and not sure what to do about if after that.

Here are some thoughts: we would probably like to have a car on the island and the idea of an 8-hr ferry Hvar - Dubrovnik is not very appealing. We would rather take the ferry back to Split and drive down to Dubrovnik.

Is there a car-ferry from Split to Hvar Island? If so, is there a web site where I can check the September schedule? This would be our best option: keep the car in Split, take it to Hvar, use it (or not) on the island, back to Split on the car-ferry, drive to Dubrovnik and drop the car there.

If this is not possible, drop the car in Split, take the regular ferry to Hvar, rent a car there, dropt it when we leave the island, ferry back to Split, rent another car for a day and drive to Dubrovnik. This sounds too complicated, and it’s probably more expensive, too.

We would rather drive from Split to Dubrovnik then take the bus. This way we can stop whenever, wherever we want. Can you please comment on these options/ideas? Is there any other way to get from Hvar island to Dubrovnik? Thanks for all the help.

There is a car ferry from Split to Stari Grad - check Jadrolinija website for schedules. You will probably have to line up at least an hour ahead. The bus from Split to Dubrovnik is only 4 1/2 hours - something to consider if you don't want the hassles of a car. There are also hydrofoil tours from Hvar to Dubrovnik - you could buy a ticket and use it as a one way - the I understand the hydrofoil is somewhat cramped. There is also a catamaran from Split to Hvar - only 1 hour. No need to take the ferry - which is 2 hours.

In addition to the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad there is car ferry from Sucuraj on the east end of Hvar island to Drvenik on the mainland about 1/3 of the way from Split to Dubrovnik. It is about 25 min and runs frequently during the day - a much better alternative than returning to Split.

C_P, Jeff,
Thank you both – great ideas. I will check the schedules, and if everything lines up correctly we’ll probably take the car ferry from Split to Stari Grad, and then the other one from Sucuraj.
Thanks again

My question's similar. However, I was told that the road from Sucuraj to the mid section of Hvar is dangerous & poorly maintained. We'll be there mid Sept. Please advise.

xyz99,
Where are you staying in Plitvice because all hotels seem to have been booked months ago?

Syl,
We’re staying at the Bellevue; we booked a couple months ago and that was the only one with rooms available. Apparently they are having lots of tours, and everything is booked already (at least that’s what they told me).

There are a few private accommodations in the area, that we looked at, but we really wanted to be in the park. Here are some links:

Good luck!

I drove the road from Jelsa to Humac - it is not as wide as the newer road from Jelsa to Hvar Grad. It wasn't poorly maintained but I defintely drove (on a scooter) at a leisurely pace. Can't speak for the conditon of the road from Humac to Sucuraji.

I am going to Dubrovnik for 2 days and then to Hvar for 5 nights. Does anyone know the quickest way to get from Dubrovnik to Hvar? Would it be quicker to go from Split to Hvar? Do we have to book ferry tickets in advance? Thanks!

hl7094a -
quickest way from Dubrovnik to Hvar would be taking the bus to Split then the catamaran from Split to Hvar. The only other way that would be quicker, MAYBE, would be IF there was a tour from Dubrovnik to Hvar on a hydrofoil which you could most likely do as a one way. I saw people doing something similiar going from Hvar to Vis so as to avoid having to go back through Split. Be flexible - have a couple options - maybe even check in with the Tourism Office in Dubrovnik regarding fastest way.
