How to get from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostela
Looking for information on transportation possibilities from San Sebastian to Santiago de Compostela. I could rent a car, but wanted to take a bus, train or plane. Thanks very much!

Flights from San Sebastián-Donostia go through Barcelona or Madrid, nothing direct. Air Nostrum (Iberia) has a direct flight from Bilbao, all other flights are one-stop.
There is no direct rail service (Renfe.com). Check Alsa.es for bus service. |
I would suggest driving. We drove from Santiago de Compostela to San Sebastian last year. The highway is great and the scenery is absolutely beautiful. Depending on how much time you have there are some great sights along the way. We stayed a few nights in Santillana Del Mar and did day trips to Altamira Caves, Comillas, Los Picos De Europa and Potes. I would also like to put in a plug for the Paradores in Spain. They are lovely. The one in Hondarribia outside of San Sebastian Is really something.Whichever you do enjoy the north of Spain. It is fantastic and not crowded.

There is rail service, but not on RENFE trains (I traveled from Hondarribia to Santiago by train in 2004, and seems the route still works, although it is slow, as in more than one day slow.)
From SS to Bilbao you use commuter rail, Euskotren: http://www.euskotren.eus/ From Bilbao to Oviedo you use FEVE, although it's now part of RENFE and there only seems to be one train a day. http://www.renfe.com/viajeros/feve/index.html From Oviedo to Leon and on to Santiago you use RENFE. Of course, you could always walk the Camino. |
