How to get from Rome to Tuscany

I posted another question and received such great reponses I have another one. I will be traveling with my husband in October to Italy; have never been.

What is the best way to travel from Rome to San Gimignano or possibly Siena. Had planned on taking Eurostar to Florence and picking up car. I'm not sure the best place to pick up car rental in Florence when getting off train. We will be finishing our trip at a hotel near Duomo in Florence so that may make a difference. Europcar has pick-up location in Siena, but how to get there? We will be staying in San Gimignano. Would like to do whatever is easiest. Very little price difference either way. Europcar locations in Florence are airport, FLORENCE VIA BORGOGNISSANTI and FLORENCE VIA DEL GELSOMINO. Thanks for any advice!

The central bus station is right across the street from the (back of the) train station in Florence --you could just head out the back side of the station and pick up the next regional bus regional bus to Siena or San Gimignano.

You can walk from the train/bus station to the Duomo-area hotel, or take a cab.

Hi J,

On one trip, we trained to Siena and picked up our car there. It did require a short taxi ride, no big deal.

Buon viaggio!

Hi J,

I think that the bus from Rome Tiburtina to Siena is easier than taking the train via Florence.

Thanks for the replies.

Sounds like no one thinks we should pick up car in Florence and drive to San Gimignano.
