How to get from Naples to Capri?
 

Sorry, I have asked this question before, but can't find it in my earlier posts.

We are flying Boston to Milan to Naples, and our first destination is Capri.

What is the best way to get from Naples airport to Capri? My husband is a little skittish about taking the train since Madrid, so if we could avoid that it would be helpful.

To find your previous posts click on your own name and that will pull all of them up on the right-hand side. Mollo Belvedere is the port in Naples that the ferries and hydrofoils leave for Capri and Sorrento etc.

Wanderer - There's an airport bus (Alibus) from Naples airport to the port at Molo Beverello every 30 mins.

Steve- can you tell me how much it costs to take the bus to Molo Beverello from the airport? Do they accommodate suitcases? How long a trip is it? Is it preferable to taking the taxi?

The Alibus costs 3 euros. Since it uses "granturismo" buses, I am almost certain that there is a separate compartment for luggage at the base of the bus.

Do note that this is a new service, which only starts on July 9, 2004.

Thanks Andre- I guess I will be out of luck. We get to Naples on 5 July. Is there any other bus service to Molo Beverello or do I need to take the taxi?

The ALIBUS service is in operation now - so you'll have no problem for the 5th July.

It departs every 30 mins from outside the terminal (- 06.30, 07.00, 07.30 ... throughout the day).
Tickets on board.

Piazza Municipio near Molo Beverello (- the port) is the last stop.
(It stops near the railway station en route.)

I believe this service may have started last year, - so the gesac website hasn't been updated - but I can confirm it is running.

Another suggestion would be the airport bus from Naples Airport directly to Sorrento (6 euros). It rides along the coast--takes about an hour and you get beautiful scenery the whole way. In Sorrento, as soon as you get off the bus--go down the stairs and follow the walkway to the harbor. There you can get the ferry to Capri for the 30 min ride.

Recently we took the airport bus mentioned above from the airport to the piazza right at Molo Beverello -- but mainly because our hotel was right there and easy to roll our luggage to it. This was great -- much better than a taxi in my opinion and much, much cheaper. I've already forgotten if that was a bus that has room for luggage underneath or just a large area on the bus -- I think it was the latter, but no problem with the luggage at all. Two mornings later we rolled our luggage the one/two blocks from our hotel (Mercure) to the port to take our boat to Ischia. The transportation problems in Naples ended up being a breeze. By the way, you buy your bus tickets right by the exit from the airport -- it is well marked and cheap, but I can't recall the exact price.

The only problem with mauld's suggestion is that if you have anything more than a very small, light bag, I sure wouldn't want to have to try to carry my luggage down those stairs in Sorrento!!!

There's always that bus for 1 euro that will take you down to the Sorrento harbor, but your right that walk would be trouble, even more on the way up -- with any sized bag!
Be aware the bus from NAP into the city of Naples does not have much storage and can get very crowded. That said, it is a pretty easy trip to the harbor from the airport.

Hawaii - The website says it runs till 23.30.

How long/far is the hydrofoil from Naples to Capri? How much? Is there still a bus from the train station to the Mollo Belvedere?

We took the Alibus from the Naples airport to the Molo Beverello port last sumer. We bought our tickets at the airport but apparently the bus was not running every half hr. during the middle of the day as we waited at least an hour in the broiling heat.

The ride to the port took at least another hour because of the massive traffic chaos which I guess is typical for Naples at noon. I don't believe a more expensive taxi ride would have been any faster unless they drove on the sidewalks. (I am sure they would try though-there are NO rules for driving in Naples)

We only had our backpacks and carry-on luggage so we took them with us onto the bus-did not see any storage area under the bus like some of the tourist buses running between Sorrento and Amalfi.

The ferry ride to Capri was only about 45 minutes and ran frequently during the summer. Have fun!

I believe that it is the no. 1 bus to Piazza Municipo, which is a few minutes walk to Molo BEVERELLO.
