We will be taking a cruise in September from Rome and have been told by the cruise company that transfers to the airport are $75 a person. Can someone help with advice about the train, bus, taxi?We have about 4 hours before our plane leaves, is that enough time to do it on our own?

Assuming disembarkation at Civitavecchia.

First of all, the ENTRANCE of the port area is about a ten-minute walk from the train station (all on town sidewalks..no hills).

BUT, your ship will undoubtedly be docked further on.

Taxis which congregate at the pier will WANT to take you all the way to Rome.

The cost of a one-way ticket on regional train services (takes about an hour) will cost you less than 10 Euro and no reservations required.

How much luggage will you have? How many in your party? Are you saying you have 4 hours between the time your ship is scheduled to dock and when your plane leaves, or 4 hours from after you clear customs to when your plane leaves?

Can you go to FCO directly fron Civitavecchia, or do you need to change trains?

If one has to change trains in Roma to get another train to the aiport, that's at least another hour.

International travelers need to be at FCO at least two hours before their plane departs.

You don't want to take the train to Rome Termini which will take longer. You want to get a ticket to Fiumicino aeroporto station. This will involve a change of trains at Roma Trastevere and total travel time is 1hr20 or 1hr35, depending on train.

Your ship docks in Civitavecchia, at least 1 hr from Rome TE by train.

It will take no less than 0:30 hr to get to FCO.

You ought to be at FCO 3 hr before your flight leaves.

You will have to go by hired car - about 0:40 hr.

We will each have a suitcase - we can begin debarking the ship at 6AM I am told, and our plane leaves at 10:50. Assuming we won't be the first off the ship, I thought we would have 4 hours. Although it sounds cheaper to take the train I am thinking we should just bite the bullet and pay for the shuttle to the airport through Carnival to make sure we get there on time. You do not want to go to Rome Termini. That will add about 1 hour to your travel time (20 minutes past Trastevere station plus a 30 minute train ride from Termini to FCO and the Termini/FCO train only runs every 30 minutes). You want to change at Trastevere. Trains from Trastevere to the airport run every 15 minutes.

You can catch the Civitavecchia/FCO trains at 6:39 and arrive FCO at 8:03 or the next train at 6:59 and arrive FCO at 8:33. These are r trains so they don't have seat reservations.

There is also a 6:22 train you can get to Trastevere (arrives Tras at 7:20) and a 6:53 train (arrives Tras at 7:54). From Trastevere you could taxi the rest of the way although in morning traffic it would probably be faster to train.

I am usually a do it on my own kind of person but the situation you are looking at is one in which I would probaly spend the money for the ship transfer. I am actually booked on a cruise for next May that departs and returns from the Rome port - and two years ago we were on a ship that docked for the day at Citavecchia. It is a ways from the ship to the port entrance - usually there is a shuttle bus going about but not sure how luggage friendly they are. Then another distance from port entrance to train station - about a 15 minute walk. I would expect the train to be quite crowded - also Italian trains are not always extremely timely (plus the possiblitiy of a strike at least once a month). And you are coming off a cruise - one medium bag each, or more, I'd guess. So when you add up all those factors, I'm thinking maybe the transfers will be a good idea. I hate having to pay for the transfers as the cruise itself is pricier than I would like but I finally decided it would be cheaper than an extra night in Rome that I was considering to give me a little more time to negotiate the transit. I think if you pay for the ships transfers they will factor in the departure time of your flight for disembarking. Have a great trip!

Thanks for all the good advice. If we had more time, I would have preferred the train to the airport, of course. It looks like we will pay that over-inflated transfer to the airport. It will just be less stressful, I suppose.

Thats really not a bad price, we just returned. Our cruise line was charging $89.00. You'll have the peace of mind, and now you can just sit back and relax, enjoy!
