1. Walk to nearest tube station
2. Get on - pausing only at most stations to look at the exhibition of archaeological finds uncovered when building it.
3. Get off at the airport.
Now a question for you:
How long have you been "staying close to the Acropolis"? And how have you missed the bit saying "airport" on the local tube maps?

flanner, I don't think the OP has arrived in Athens yet.
The web site for your hotel will probably tell you which subway station is nearest. Or find the hotel's address on Google Maps and look around there for a subway station. The Athens subway is very new and nice (built for the Olympics). It runs to the airport and to the Piraeus.

I echo Brotherleelove's question, which hotel? Staying 'close to the Acropolis' means there are a number of metro stations, which one is nearest depends on exact location. It will also determine whether the bus is an option.

There are hotels that are near the Acropolis, but impossible to walk to with luggage from the metro station.
Closest metro station to the Acropolis, is the same named station of the red line.
From the airport you will need to change from the blue to the red line at Syntagma Square.
Having the name of the hotel would be of help, as many hotels not necessarily next to he Acropolis are advertised as near to it.

My hotel is the Acropolis Hill and I found out the station is "Acropolis" station. Thanks for letting me know that the metro goes all the way to the airport. That relieves a lot of stress.

Best way to get to the Acropolis Hill is to get off at the Syngrou-Fix station of the Red Line ( second station after Syntagma Square).
Then simply walk up Drakou Street, straight to the end.
The street is pedestrianized near the Metro Station with many cafes, it ends at Mouson Street, right where the Acropolis Hill hotel is located.
As you approach the hotel, you will have to walk up the hill.. so maybe a second alternative would be to take a taxi from the Syngrou-Fix Station, especially if you have big luggage.
