How to get from AMS Schiphol to central Paris and backwards

What is my best option? - I am open to both train and plane.

On SNCF website, I can find trains (3.5 hr) between Paris Gare du Nord and Amsterdam Centraal. Can't seem to find trains to or from Schiphol.

When I was at AMS last month, I heard at least 1 international train announced (or so I thought). Can I travel from AMS direct to France?

It's too early, obviously, to find Prems or other discount fares between Amsterdam and Paris but if I go 1 month out from today, I find fares as low as € 35 and many as low as € 49 one way.

Lowest airfare is €145 return and then there's the hassle of a commute to and (worse) from COG. So train may be the best option, even if it means taking a train to the central Amsterdam station.

Can anyone with direct experience advise?

D**n smartphones and d**n autocorrect function!

I thought I wrote "Paris and back". Instead the title suggests I want to return "backwards".

BTW, if you're wondering why I am asking, here's the deal:

KLM has an amazing 4 day deal from Canada to African destinations: $1299 return, w/ free stopover in AMS.

I want to go to Cape Town but I also want to go to the Paris GTG that amwosu and her co-conspirators are organizing for the start of October.

As it's also a trip in celebration of my 60th birthday, we all gonna party like it's 1969.

To understand the issue, need to look at details. For example,

When I go to:

http://www.voyages-sncf.com/
Depart: Paris (Toutes gares intramuros)
Arrivee: Schiphol
01/06/2012 then Reserver
I see trains every 2 hrs.

Are these the info you are entering except for whatever is the date you are traveling? The 35€ fare requires advanced purchase and should be bought as soon as the booking window opens several months ahead. PREM is a TGV terminology. Thalys uses a different terminology for non-flex printable tickets.

Have a look at NSHispeed.nl. They have an English version of their site. Thalys stop at Schiphol so that's not a problem.
Do allow enough time after your planned arrival at Schiphol.

OK that seems clear. Thanks for clarifying.

I was mistakenly entering Amsterdam as departure point, thinking it would find fares both from AMS and the central station (ie "tous les points de depart")

Try the http://www.thalys.com site. The train is the way to go.
I helped my brother in law in Montreal book tickets on the Thalys site last month and all worked smoothly. Their best prices start 3 months out from your travel date.

I remember our train stopping at Schipol but don't see the airport offered as a departure station. Not a big deal as the train from the airport to Centraal Sation only takes about 20 minutes.

An early happy birthday to you!
