How to call Paris?
 

For some reason, I cannot reach a ph. # in Paris. I am dialing 011(for Iernational) -33 (France)-1(Paris) and then a 10 digit number in Paris, starting with 01...

What am I doing wrong?

Sounds like you have extra digits in there.

Should be 011-33-1-xx-xx-xx-xx.

So that would be 8 digits after the 1, not 10.

In many European countries, the lead zero listed on a phone number functions much the same way the 1 functions before USA numbers...it tells the equipment this is a local trunk call as opposed to an international call.

Thus a business in London might list it's number as 020 8555 1212 (this is a totally made up number by the way)....while in the UK you would dial it as listed (in case you're interested in such trivia, 20 is the city code for London, the 8 signifies outer London as opposed to innter London [which would be 7]) and the 555 1212 is the phone number.

Now if calling that number from outside the UK, you would use the international prefix for the country you are dialing from (011 in Canada and the US) 44 which is the country code for the UK, 2085551212 omitting the 0...same thing works in France with 1 being the city code for Paris...the country code for France is 33.

Incidentally, just to add to the confusion or end some of the confusion, with many mobile phones, the + key represents the international dialing code.

Therefore from a US mobile phone, if you were in the US and dialing France, you could dial +33 1 xx xx xx xx and if you are using a mobile phone in France and dialing the USA directly on the phone you would dial +1 555 1212 and not have to worry just what the international dialing prefix is in France...and on many ads you see numbers listed with the +

Drop the leading zero on French telephone numbers when calling France from abroad. Thus, 01.23.45.67.89 within France becomes +33123456789 outside France.

luveurop is right. You should have an 8-digit number after 1 for Paris. I have a number for a hotel in Paris at hand that goes as follows. See ?

> +33 1 47 05 40 49

When you are in province of France (=outside the capital, Paris), you will dial 01 47 05 40 49. There you need to dial 10 digits.
