How to call England
 

I know this sounds dumb but how does one call England from France (ie: country code, etc). Also, is there a different way to call a mobile phone.

Take the english number. Remove the first zero. Put 44 in front of it.

Eg: 0123 456 7890 becomes 44123 456 7890. Same goes for mobiles.

Don't forget the prefix to indicate it is an international call; generally in Europe that's 00 so if a number in London is listed as (0)20 7555 1212, you would dial from France 0044 20 7555 1212...from the USA you would dial 011 44 20 7555 1212 as 011 is the code for international calls in the US...on a mobile phone you would use the + sign which is a universal international symbol (although probably not when using a calling card of some sort) so you might dial + 44 20 7555 1212 from either a US or European mobile.

If you go into google and just type, for example, "how to call U.K." they'll show you this great form - full of info, that walks you thru any overseas call. I found it very helpful this year as I planned my Europe trip. (what did we do before google and it's comrades?)

Yeah they are but remember the OP wanted to know how to call the UK from France and those instructions are not there..

Nor are the facts about the cheapest rates available.

My comment was directed to jo_ann and tangentually to FLUFFY re calling Europe from the States. Sometimes we try to make things a lot more complicated than they need to be. Sometimes the old fashioned "letting your fingers do the walking" is easier.

I haven't used a telephone directory in years and while there is info regarding international calling such as the prefix code 011 and the country codes (44 for the UK) what is missing, I think and causes some trouble, is how you translate a number you might see in an ad or on the web like 020 7555 1212 into the idea that you drop the leading 0 (which you would use in calling the UK from the UK, sort of a signal to the quipment this is a local call much as 1 is in the US) so really in some respects even with the phone book appealing to others is not such a terrible thing. Also some people see the + sign and don't know what it stands for.
