BTW and I know the thread is 3 years old, most credit card companies advise customers to call their US number collect to report lost or stolen cards...

1-800 numbers usually work as noted although the numbers are not toll free if dialed from outside the United States. You will be billed at international direct dial rates. If you do not wish to be billed, hang up before the other person answers.

Also, I do seem to remember having trouble completed a call from France via my French sim card to a US toll free number and was told to substitute some other code for the 1-888,,,don't remember all the particulars.

And again yes I realize the thread is dated.

>>How (and why) do people resurrect dead threads like this?<<

Not hard to figure out... because people do a search on a topic then don't notice the dates.

I am going to resurrect this thread because I am the original poster. In re-reading this thread I am still so amazed at all the wonderful help everyone gave me. I am also amazed at my incredible naivety/stupidity in leaving my purse, money, credit cards, passport, phone, under the seat in the car! A very hard lesson learned, for sure.

To update: the only card we had was my husband's AmEx, which was in wallet in his pants pocket. Guess what? Almost no one took AmEx, including the American Embassy in Paris where we had to obtain new temporary passports! You should have seen us trying to drive from the south of France to Paris trying to avoid toll roads and trying to find restaurants, hotels and gas stations that took AmEx.

When I finally got through to the credit card companies we were trying to get them to wire us funds. Have you tried to spell French cities like Arcachon to someone on the phone with a heavy Indian accent? They promised to wire us $500. It NEVER arrived. Ugh! But it was an adventure we laugh about now. When we got home, our AAA homeowners insurance reimbursed us for everything, including the cost of new passports.

Thanks again, Fodorites!
