Sally:

I would never presume to do itineraries or planning for anything other than places I have a great deal of familiarity with.

I suppose if a totally novice traveler came to me and asked for some basic advice about places I'm not familiar with, I would have the resources (I basically have a room that is devoted to nothing but books and maps and info I've picked up from travels over manay years) to get the answers, and if it were simple enough I might try it, but as a general rule,I would say if you are contemplating getting into this "business," you need to establish a narrow niche for yourself and become expert in that area.

I agree totally w/ StCirq. I have been all over Europe and other parts of the world. But I limit my "consulting" work to the UK and sometimes for Ireland. I lived in the UK for 5 years and get back there often so I know a lot more about the details and "get arounds" w/o having to do a ton of research every time.

You really need to establish yourself as a regional expert to get a lot of credibility.

Thanks for your thoughtful answers. That is a big help to me. We have been going back to specific areas of Italy, France, and Holland for the past ten years(my husband works with wetlands and coordinates with several wetlands offices in Europe), so I would feel very comfortable helping people plan trips to those places, but definitely not to places that I was not familiar with.

I was wondering because when I looked at websites of several travel consultants, it appeared that they offered help with several different countries.

Thank you for helping me figure this out. Now I am looking forward to perhaps before too long getting one of you to help me plan a trip to England- I've never been there- or to another part of France!
