How much does a sleeper cost?
 

Hello,

Planning to take a sleeper while we are in france & italy. Most likely from Paris to Nice. On the site it gives the prices for couchettes and seats but not for sleepers.

Just so I have an idea if this is an option for us, what is an approximate cost for a sleeper? It is for 2 people.

Depends if it is 1st or 2nd class. Probably around 80E.

Are you just wanting to experience a sleeper car? If not you can fly Easyjet from Paris to Nice for as little as 15E or take the TGV train(6 hours).

If you go to www.sncf.com and choose the 21:17 from Paris to Nice, you will be able to book a 1 cl sleeper for two for 475E.

Or you can take the TGV 2cl for 50E for two.

The SNCF web site gives a total fare per person of 184.50 euros in a T2 compartment. Sleeping cars are not first or second class. This train has T2 compartments which have two berths and a washbasin: the fare you pay depends on whether you share a compartment or have one to yourself (to get a compartment to yourself, you have to pay a first-class fare, plus a supplement); since there are two of you, I assume you don't mind sharing.

I paid over 170. Euro in 1997 Nice-Paris overnight.

I paid roughly $75/person for a double sleeper on a train from Vienna to Florence. I believe (and from the looks at the prices above) that the night trains from France are much more expensive. We couldn't find the price online either, and had to call RailEurope to get the prices.

Basic train fares in most European countries are calculated from the distance in kilometres. The rates vary greatly between countries - France is about three times as much as Italy. Sleeping accommodation varies depending on the country and standard.
The night train from Paris to Nice is pretty good and the T2 compartments are comfortable. Flying will take up more time.

<b>Note to those contemplating saving a night's lodging by sleeping on the train:</b>

Forget it. When I priced it, I found we could stay in a four- or five-star hotel for what the railroads charge.

But sleeper seats are only $11 and not terribly uncomfortable in First Class. The only advantage I can think of is that by traveling at night, you increase your daylight sightseeing time.
