How much do i need?

Hi Guys,

My best friend and I are leaving for Europe next Saturday.

We will be doing 6 countires

- Serbia
- Croatia
- Germany (Berlin)
- Amsterdam
- Spain (Barcelona)
- Malta

I am planning on taking over $9000.00, $2000.00 of that will be fore accommodation so that will leave me with $7000.00 spending money. From experienced travellers do you think this will be enough for 4 weeks and 5 days?

Our main return flights and all internal flights from country to country are booked.

Not sure why you would budget $7,000 (33 days - $212/day?) for everything else besides lodging, where $2,000 in 33 days means about $60/day and probably staying in hostels at high season in most of these places, if you can even find hostels that are available.

I guess the more obvious question is: why are you taking $9,000 in cash(?) to Europe with you? No credit cards? ATM cards?

I am staying in hostels and hotels and with family. No it wont be in cash, of course it's all in the bank with atm cards/ travel cards. I guess travelling europe for the first time my real question is, will $7000 be enough just for spending money, keeping in mind dinners, nights out, cab rides & tours/activities.

Dollars are not good for the counties you wish to visit.;-)
Berlin, Amsterdam and Paris are very expensive cities.

well, $9000 = about €8000 which is roughly €240 per day for 33 days. you need to start thinking in €s - that's what you'll be getting out of ATMS and that's what you'll be charged in.

I agree that there is no point in arbitrarily allowing $2000 for accommodation; €54 a night isn't going to get you much and actually with €240 or so a day you should be able to afford a bit better than that.

if you are staying with friends and family some of the time, AND all your flights are covered, I should think that it should be ample.

I always reckon on spending on meals etc roughly the same we've spent on accommodation so if you are staying with friends and family some of the time, AND all your flights are covered, I should think that it should be ample.

oops - don't know what happened there.

Berlin an expensive city? Rubbish. By far the least expensive of Western European capitals (and also cheaper than Munich, Frankfurt a.M., Hamburg or Cologne.)

It was such a good answer it bears repeating!

Should be enough - but be aware that prices can be very high in some places and for some things. Student cafes, pubs and clubs usually have cheap alcohol. But if you try other sorts of nightlife you may find that hard liquor and mixed drinks are shockingly expensive.

Do you have reservations for your accommodations yet? If not I would get them immediately - then you will know exactly how much you will be paying. And I hope you have checked out any hostels you will be staying in since while most are quite pleasant there are some that are truly dreadful and even not very safe (drugs and theft).

Also be aware that you will be in some very hot places in hot weather and likely you will not have access to AC.
