How many times have you visited your favorite country?
In this thread we tell about our favorite country
Like how many times have you visited it?
Would you want to live or retire there?
Are you going to visit it again in the near future? when?
Your favorite cities in that country?
etc, etc, etc
It doesn't have to be European country, any country in the world is fine, as long as it's not your home country

I'd say that Germany is my favorite country. I lived there for 5 years in the 60's when I was teaching at Heidelberg American High School. I have returned many times--maybe 8 to 10 times.
I love the architecture, especially the baroque churches, and the scenery. I like the people. I like the fact that I always feel safe there.
My sister and I traveled together for seven or eight years, and at first she was reluctant to go to Germany because she thought it would be kitschy. However, when we arrived in Germany, her comment was "I could live here."
I feel the same way. I could live in Germany.

No question---Italy is our favorite and we have visited 17 times now. The highlights of our trips would take a book and would not fit here. I am often asked my favorite destinations:
1. The lakes
2. Tuscan hill towns
3. Venice
4. The Amalfi coast
5. The Ligurian coast

This would probably be better in the Lounge, and provide some nice, non political, light relief over there right now.
Favourite country, Tanzania, only once sadly.
Second favourite, USA 7 or 8 times.
Not including the UK which is my all time favourite, because I was born there, but no longer live there .

Wow some of you must be professional travelers!
I love Italy, have visited a few times now.
Heading back in a week to see some new regions and start to look at areas to purchase a small vacation/retirement home.
I'd like to have something to enjoy before I'm too old to enjoy it!

I think maybe my favourite country is "the next one", but I've lived in France twice - first time 7 months and I've just had my 3 year anniversary this time round, so we could say I'm in a long-term relationship with France I've lived in 4 different regions here, but definitely haven't seen all of the country by a long shot. Not sure on favourite city, but I liked Strasbourg a lot (not one of the places I've lived).

My favorite country is Austria, no contest. I spent all my summers there as a kid, because my mother's family lives there. We stayed at my Oma's house usually 6-8 weeks during the summer holidays.
We went every single year until my Oma died, and I've been back once since, when I was 25. Yes, I'm going back soon! I'm going back next year when I'll be 29.
I do dream of retiring there. My Oma used to run a bed and breakfast out of the house for many years (it's quite large with three big bedrooms downstairs), and its always been a sort of secret desire of mine (and my sister's too, I think) to keep the house in the family, live there and start the B&B again.
My favorite cities in Austria include the small town of Altmunster where my family is from and nearby Gmunden, where we visited often. I also love Salzburg, Bad Ischel and Hallstatt (of course).
Mainly though, I love the mountains. Even after all this time I find them overwhelmingly beautiful.

Oh! Some many Fodorites travel so much. How do
they manage to keep their socks clean? Just kidding, of
course.
My favorite country is Italy. I have been there 3 times
since first visiting in 1967. DH and I will be going again in 2013 to Sicily. So far, my favorite area in Italy is the Amalfi Coast. Maybe that will change after seeing Sicily!
No, I don't want to retire there. Our current location, Washington D.C.) has so much to offer that i want to remain.

Andrejeffry: Oh I am so old that I would hate to tell you, but I remember watching Reagan walking down Pensylvania Ave on his inauguration day and sadly now I can't even remember his first name....Walter, Don or...help me here...
Anyway my favorite country is FRANCE, about 20-25 times, however, I have visited GERMANY at least 30-35 times ( I gave up trying to remember how many exactly). plus I used to spend my summers in Basel and Geneva where I used to take the bus/train/car to France and Germany at least a couple more times.
