I wonder how often Sir Les Patterson takes a shower.

This thread reminds me of a roommate I had in college. He had a summer job working on a garbage truck. Believe it or not, he took his shower before he went to work, not after. Personally I take one shower a day while traveling, usually in the morning to get rid of the wild pillow hair. Occasionally on a hot day I may take a second shower later in the day before going out. As a guy, it only takes me about ten minutes to shower and shampoo so it's not a big deal.

Having extremely dry hair I am one of the few people in the world, apparently, who still uses shower caps. I shower daily, but the hair is washed every other day.

With the grooming rituals that attend showering (at my age, 49, these include face toners, retin A, special cleansers from the Amazon, etc.) two showers a day would seriously cut into sightseeing!

My hygene habits remain fairly consistant at home or on the road.

Shower and shampoo each morning unless I'm going to be hiking or doing some other strenuous activity which will require me to shower afterwards.

Showering any less than every other day is a turnoff.

As we age we all need more creams for various body parts unless you don't mind looking like a sharpei. These creams get heavy even if you put them in tiny bottles so I usually buy some in Europe so they do double duty as a souvenier.

Last trip I took Tibetan massage oil as a moisturizer and used it after bathing in the morning. Sometimes after a long day of walking and sightseeing it is relaxing to take a long hot shower before bedtime. I use lavendar oil then for aroma therapy (hey, I'm from Los Angeles!).

No rules, do what you want.

how odd to even care about other's shower habit. You know that everyone is so different, and why would travel change your normal behaviour?

when on holiday, i usually do it all in the evening.

as for toiletries, I don't pack much with me from the states,i usually just buy small bottles of whatever i need when I get to wherever I am.

This is just me, but I can't fathom getting into bed at night without being freshly showered, whether I sweated a drop or not all day. Maybe it's living in the tropics all these years because I used to shower in the mornings when I lived in the US. Now I wonder how and why I did that instead of showering at night.

(shrugging shoulders emoticon)

I do agree that everyone has their own preference and there isn't necessarily one "proper way." I just wish that certain people on some of mhy flights would shower right before they board.

Underhill expressed it well.

My friends in Switzerland think it's funny how often I bathe, which is preferably once daily.

If you are staying in a hotel I don't believe it matters what you want to do. If you are a guest in someone's home I think you should adapt your behaviour to their environment as much as possible.

BTW showering AND washing hair twice daily seems an awful big waste of precious vacation time.

I think it's only Americans that love these kind of questions. We talk more openly about such things.

Why should one's bathing routine change just because they're traveling, as long as they have the same access to a shower as they do at home?

For me, it's morning and evening...hair too. Even at my age (which will remain unspecified, it's still oily. I like to start the day fresh and go to bed clean. Call me crazy........

I'm with cat. No change in my habits here or there, and a night bath always helps me wash off the day, and lets my hair dry overnight without me having to waste valuable sightseeing time under a hairdryer in the morning.

<<Why should one's bathing routine change just because they're traveling, as long as they have the same access to a shower as they do at home?>>

Because once a day (or on occasions, less) might be appropriate for a more sedentary lifestyle at home... and somewhat more frequently may add to enjoying a more active pace while traveling...

Hi, Rex -

Don't think you quite got what I was saying.....I take two showers a day at home, whether I'm sedentary OR active. That's normal for me and there's no reason to alter the routine "on the road", unless for some reason I had no access to a shower.

I replied to you, CatFancier, because your post had the generic...

<<Why should one's bathing routine change...>>

rather than saying

"Why should my bathing routine change..."

For me (and I have the notion thazt it's what tiaw was asking) a once daily routine becomes more frequent... and (some) Europeans perceive this as excessive...

thus... I was commenting on a reason why

...one's bathing routine [might] change.

'One's' bathing routine, one hopes, does indeed reflect any relevant changes in perspiration, ambient temperature, atmospheric humidity, the level of particulate matter in the air, and close encounters with bird poop.

SeaUrchin, I too can't believe that I just responded here.

Well, I know why I'm here: counting down the minutes to DD's wedding on Saturday, while suffering through a huge family feud and crisis. So this is fun!

Reminds me of the days when my dear departed best friend and I used to compete to out gross-out one another. Many decades later, the battles I still remember fondly are who could fit the most rollers in their hair, who could eat the most baked potatoes, and who could go the longest without taking a bath or shower. My mother was alive; her's was dead. She won that one.
