How many pictures do you take on vacation?

We are going to Paris in 2 weeks for six days including a daytrip to Normandy and a visit to Giverny. We will also be in the Loire Valley for two additional days.

I have 2 memory sticks that hold about 80 pictures each. Do you think it necessary that I purchase one more? They are about $50 for another 80 pictures.

Thank you for your time & hope you enjoyed your weekend!

Wow, that's not much. I just checked my camera and I have 10 gig card in it. I shot 160 pics in Boston last Saturday and I can't imagine going six days on that many, but I don't know your style. Can you, by chance, get larger capacity memory sticks for your camera?

flygirl May 7th, 2006 06:31 PM

10 gig? wow.

cigalechanta May 7th, 2006 06:31 PM

flyboy, I live in Boston and would love to see your photos from your prospective.

You only get 80 pictures for $50? We get about 275 pictures on a $20 memory card. Are you sure there isn't a cheaper place to buy your memory sticks? That just seems awfully expensive to me.

As to the number of pictures you're likely to take, obviously that depends on the person. But we took about 600 on our 5 day trip to Ireland.

I took approx 450 in Hu & Ro over 2 weeks of Autumn '04.

Took at least as many in SE Asia this post recent February. I'm a bit compulsive.

I carry along a 40GB external hard drive sort of device in which to download them. Some people have them burnt off to CD's at shops. Some download to iPods or handheld PCs. Some just buy a lot of memory cards/sticks.

On two 1 gb sd cards we shot 1037 pics in 2 weeks. I bought the cards at Office Depot for appx 35 each.

80 pictures barely gets me through a day or day and a half in Paris. I was there for 8 days in March and took 486 (actually a few more but I deleted 15 or 20 along the way). It would have been more but the weather wasn't very good. Giverny isn't open in March so I didn't go there. Giverney is worth 40 to 60 shots by itself.

And Normandy - I can't imagine just taking a few shots there.

but what format do you use - 80 pictures for $50 seems way WAY to high.

a) It's better to enjoy the scenery than to obsess over taking photos

b) Are you sure about memory sticks/capacity/price???

Hi

I try to take as much memoory as I can so that I can take as many pictures as I want. We went to Paris for a week recently and I came back with about 800 MB of pictures. Many of them are of course not any good and ill be deleted. But in order to take a few good ones you have to take a lot of pictures :-)

I sell my photos (trying to finance the next trip with the sales of the photos from the last trip!) so I take LOTS> I have no problem taking 20 shots to get one good keeper.

I found I filled a 512Mg card about every day on vacation (300 shots). I have a 30G photo storage device that I'm bringing with me this summer to Ireland so I can dump the 3 512Mg cards I have periodically. It's much easier than bringing a laptop! I got this device online (eBay) in the packaging for $75.

Echoing what others say, you are getting screwed on the price. Check out CompUSA or another computer dealer in your area. My current memory chip holds up to 30 minutes of video, or 300+ photos and it cost just under $50.

Per your question, it depends on what kind of mood I am in and whether or not I want to deal with the camera. I write in my journal all the time, so lots of times instead of taking a picture, I sit and describe into my journal. But if I am in the mood. . . watch out! I will snap just about anything in sight!

GreenDragon May 8th, 2006 05:53 AM

Yup, my 512Mgs hold about 300+ photos at my camera's highest resolution (3.2Mg), and cost about $45 on ebay. You need a cheaper source for memory! :)

Perhaps you're shooting at too high a resolution, at least more than what is needed. Check your camera settings to make sure you're not shooting at the highest resolution.
My wife and I spend 3 weeks in Italy whenever we go, and last year we shot about 1100 pictures in those 3 weeks. Memory is cheap compared to the cost of the trip. We take a lot of photos and sort them later. Some get deleted of course.

CRAZY4TRAVEL May 8th, 2006 06:41 AM

We usually take 300 photos or so which will usually fit on my 512mg card which cost me $75 Canadian. My internal memory will hold another 30 shots. My mother loaned me her 512mg card to take along in case. $50 for a card that will only hold 80 photos does not seem like a great deal.

So there may be an advantage to film cameras for the non-professional: I susually take 10 rolls of 36 frames in a period of 3 weeks to a month, and still get rid of half of them at a minimum. One learns to choose the shots and eventually edit.

wally34949 May 8th, 2006 07:14 AM

You can always burn your pictures on to a CD and reshoot. I paid 5 euros in Santorini, Greece, to do this two years ago.

EmilySD May 8th, 2006 08:24 AM

Thank you for all the responses!

You were all correct, I had my figures wrong. The memory sticks I have are only 128mb and hold 80 pics. The one at BestBuy for $50 is 512mb, so I guess it will hold 320 pics. It definatley looks like I should get it though! I have a Sony cybershot.

I do tend to take a lot of pictures, 120 in Utah over 3 days. I only used about 30 in my scrapbook. I'm trying to be a little more selective in my picture taking. And as djkbooks remarked, I'm trying to enjoy what I'm seeing more than worrying about taking the pictures as much.

Thank you again for your time and have a great week!

michellen May 8th, 2006 08:31 AM

Buy more memory sticks now! We bought 3 for our 2 week trip to Italy and thought that would be enough, but I practically used all those in our first 3 days in Rome! You're m,uch better buying them at home than buying them from a touristed location where they triple the price! We cam home with around 550 pictures (100 per memory stick).

EmilySD May 8th, 2006 08:37 AM

I suppose I could buy two, and not open them. Then if I only use one, I can return the other when I get back.

Thanks again!
